This review is from: Doom: The Board Game (Toy)
For the cost of this game, you really expect something special, and Doom does not disappoint. The game comes in a HUGE box and has an almost overwhelming amount of miniatures, cards, tokens, board pieces, doors, 2 separate rule books, etc.

The Good: Production value. The cardboard pieces are sturdy (and laminated), the miniatures and tokens closely resemble their respective counterparts from the Doom 3 video game, and the atmosphere of the source material really shines through. Playing the game with a friends is quite enjoyable and takes anywhere from 1-3 hours (depending on your group).

The Bad: There are so many rules! The rule book is 12 giant pages, then there's a scenario book for the invader that has even more rules. Your best bet is to read through them once, then head over to the Doom section of boardgamegeek.com and print off some quick rules sheets for each player. Also, the playing board is dynamically generated as the marines explore the Mars base, so every time the marines move to a new section, the invader player has to assemble the new area, place tokens and enemies, and read a passage from the scenario book. Assembling the new sections really grinds the game to a halt if you're not well organized, so I went out and bought some plastic trays (from the fishing section of my local department store) to keep all the tokens in. Seriously, there are hundreds of pieces and they need to be well organized to keep the game flowing smoothly. Lastly, the game seems to favor the invader player (or maybe my friends just suck at playing the marines), so the marine players can get frustrated if they're constantly being slaughtered.

The Ugly: The cyberdemon pawns come in 2 separate pieces that must be connected together; however, the peg on 1 of my pieces was melted and deformed, so I had to boil the part in hot water before I could join it with the other half. Also, a lot of my other miniatures' bases are warped a bit as well, so the bigger monsters tend to tip over more than I'd like. Also, there are some misprints in the rule book, so be sure to check out the Doom section on Fantasy Flight's website for corrections and clarifications (and difficulty modifiers/extra scenarios).

Overall, this game looks great, plays great (after you and your co-players get the hang of all the rules), is good fun (as long as you don't mind games that take a few hours), and was, in my opinion, worth the cost.
