This review is from: Fantasy & Fuge in G Minor for Orchestra (Audio CD)
Why this disc is no longer available is a mystery to me - it contains, among other, quite simply the finest interpretation of Bach's 1st Keyboard Concerto BWV 1052 ever, Glenn Gould's with Mitropoulos and the Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam in Salzburg, August 10, 1958 (better than either the 1955 studio recording with Bernstein or the 1957 Leningrad live version with Slovak). What orchestral and pianistic sweep, if not torrent!! One to seek out!
Track list (all live performances from Salzburg): 1-2 Bach~Mitropoulos/Mitropoulos, VPO: Fantasia and Fugue BWV 542 (August 24, 1958) 3-5 Bach/Gould; Mitropoulos, RCO: Keyboard Cto. No. 1 BWV 1052 (August 10, 1958) 6-9 Bach/Milstein: Partita No. 1 BWV 1002 for Violin Solo (August 6, 1956) 10-15 Bach/Anda: Partita No. 2 BWV 826 for Keyboard (August 15, 1972) 16-17 Bach/Ludwig; Karajan, VPO: "Agnus Dei" & "Dona nobis pacem" from Mass in B Minor (August 20, 1961) Sound quality (Austrian National Broadcasting Company, that is ORF, recordings), never very noisy or distorted, ranges from acceptably good mono (tracks 1-2 and 16-17 sound a bit congested), over fairly good mono (tracks 3-5, Gould's studio recording with Bernstein is recorded in better mono, but believe me, you really want to listen to this) and very good mono (tracks 6-9), to very good stereo (tracks 10-15). Greetings from Switzerland, David. |
