5.0 out of 5 stars great tips
This book could help any artist; no need to have an interest in Fantasy. Lots of good tips and the art is great. I found it inspiring and anxious to try out all the good advice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boris reveals more but not all
I'm hungry for Boris's painting technique. The first book of his was enlightening but skipped the critical part of his process, rendering the final product. This book gets closer to revealing his and Judy's magic but still left me wondering how many things are accomplished. 1.0 out of 5 stars genuine sham, October 6, 2006
This review is from: Fantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide (Paperback)
The claim that step by step the artists reveal their secrets is a sham, they reveal nothing, and their text is just airy rap about nothing. The artwork must be their left overs, including several pages devoted to a tedious ad campain for a fruit juice. In addition there are several ridiculous repeated images just for fill out. A shoddy and hastily book put together for self promotion. It's amazing how two such capable fantasy artists dont have the IMAGINATION to put together the genuine article. Buy this only if you are a die hard fan with no sense of discrimination!

This book I feel was much better than there first tutorial book, "Fantasy Art Techniques". That book left me with a lot of questions. But this one, was great. I am sure they get asked numerous questions by students and onlookers concerning the best technique. Everyone, like myself, looks for a cookie cutter method but when it comes to oil you have to come into your own. I notice there basic advice throughout the book is to just practice. I understand what that really means now. You have to learn through trial and error what works and what does not. Your own mistakes will be your lessons. But saying that, they still provide some great techniques for one to study and use.

Actually Dan Santos suggested this book for me after I was asking him some questions about Boris and Julie's style. I am glad he suggested this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Help., January 3, 2007
This review is from: Fantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide (Paperback)
Truly helpful and a Great Help with learning textures and techniques from professional artists. Certain pictures of Boris Vallejo's and Julie Bell's work are shown in a step by step process that you can follow in your own works. If you are not interested in learning how to paint this book is also a great collection to admire, either way you will not be disappointed. It's truly helped me with my digital painting I cannot wait until I have the free time to practice the techniques shown in the book.

If you are learning how to paint, don't waste your money on "How To Paint" books by people who have not achieved anything. Buy "Fantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide" because Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell are the best painters working in the industry at this moment. You have to learn from the best to be the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good advice from excellent artists, September 16, 2009

This review is from: Fantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide (Paperback)
I've been entralled by Boris and Julie's book covers for many years. Fixated by their figures, fantasy creatures, and supernatural landscapes, I couldn't even imagine painting figures in such detail. What a surprize to find this book! This isn't your usual art instruction book. Rather, it's a well organized dialog with two of the most talented and accomplished artists of their genre. They share a considerable amount of advice and details about techniques, style, composition, and more for painters of all levels. It inspired me to take the plunge and try my hand at realistic portrait and figure painting, and by following the methods outlined and demonstrated in this book, I've been been pleasantly surprized with the results. Since then, I've acquired a substantial library of books by other authors, but I find myself returning to this and others by Boris and Julie, especiallyFantasy Art Techniques for reference and inspiration.
