What's more important: the enclosure or the drive inside? I would care more about keeping my data than how nice the outside case looks. Obviously, the buyer can't tell what kind of hard drive Fantom puts in these things. I guess people buy it from the looks of the case, or they find it convenient to just buy an pre-assembled external drive? Seriously though, it's not that difficult to buy a hard drive, get an enclosure that you'd like and put it together; it's MUCH better that way, especially since the costs of drives are going down so much, you can get more for your money too.

I've never had a hard drive fail on me, but this drive did. Honestly, I wasn't very happy with the drive even when I first got it, which was about 2 years ago, because it was louder than other drives.

Funny how the warranty ended (only 1 year which says a lot about the company) just before the drive died. I opened up the enclosure, which would void your warranty too but it didn't matter for me anyway. The hard drive that Fantom had in mine was manufactured by some place called "Magnetic Data Technologies"; I looked up their website and it was shocking to find out that they used REFURBISHED parts. Well, no wonder the drive didn't last as long as a hard drive should.

The drive is also 2 MB cache, which is not much. Do yourself a favor and go for a more reputable brand external drive; or better yet, make your own by buying a hard drive and an enclosure that you would like. It's your money but I would not risk getting a Fantom drive. I will never buy a Fantom Drive.

I had an earlier model of the fantom drive. I wanted a new one so ordered it hoping for a nice replacement. I ordered 2 at once; one works fine. The other had a large part (presumably the drive) rattling around in the case. I returned it and got a replacement. It ALSO had a large part rattling around in the case, but less so. I plugged it into my computer but the drive didn't spin, and it didn't mount.

Serious quality control issues.

As previously noted, Fantom is kind enough to provide their consumers with a low-cost option for their storage needs. They are able to do this by passing off refurbished hard drives as new items.

My 200GB external hard drive failed yesterday. I opened the enclosure and researched the model number printed on the label to learn a company MDT is the vendor of the actual hard drive and they ( quote from their website )

"Our products are refurbished using OEM equpiment. Products from this process meets original OEM standards."

So, I warn all who are tempted as I was by the low prices of Fantom Drives. You are NOT buying a NEW product.

This is the worst hard drive I ever bought. I acutally bought their 500GB model TFDU50072. The first one died after two weeks, just after it was used for a critical system backup/restore. If it had died before we restored our server we would have had to close our business permanently. After a couple of months of trying to get them to RMA the drive, they finally exchanged the drive. I told them I wanted to remove the drive from the enclosure first and hook it up directly to a PC so I could make sure the drive was erased (since it presumably still had our critical business info on it), but they said it would void our warranty, so I sat the entire enclosure on the back of a 15" speaker magnet overnight before I sent it back. The new drive seems to work for the most part, but it fails to mount after every reboot, so it must be power-cycled to get it to mount. This makes the drive effectively useless as a backup drive, since I have to remember to remount the backup drive every time I reboot or my automatic backups will fail. I won't bother trying to return it Fantom again, after all the headaches this drive has caused and after reading literally dozens of similar stories about Fantom Drives, I will never buy from them again. I have two other external drives built with cheap 3rd party enclosures and internal WesternDigital drives and have never had the slightest hint of a problem. Do yourself a favor and buy your own enclosures and drives and make your own. It takes the technical skills of a 6-year-old to do it. If you can assemble legos you can put together your own drive that is much better than any Fantom Drive.

I had a difficult time finding any reviews on this hard drive when I was searching for a backup option. I made this purchase on instinct and I am satisfied that I did. Apart from a cool name, the Fantom has met all my expectations and needs.

The compact design allows it to fit easily at my computer desk and it is easily transported. It is detected quickly when plugging in for the first time, and since more computers have USB 2.0 capability than firewire it is convenient for transfering data with most newer computers. The drive is very quiet but I have found it is more quiet when actually setting it on top of my tower as opposed to putting it on the desk itself.

The drive is shipped with the FAT 32 file system so you have to convert it to NTFS yourself if you want that type of file system. The Fantom also comes with USB 2.0 CD software for Windows 98 SE/ME users. The drive is not designed to be partitioned and there could be technical issues if this is tried. Also, for users of Windows NT 4.0 this drive will not be compatible.

I use the drive to back up my hard drive and also my music and video files. The transfer speed varies, based on how many programs are running, dma settings for the hard drive, operating system, etc. The Fantom has a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 1GB every 18 seconds. I was able to transfer about 15gb to and from the hard drive in about 4 minutes. I highly endorse this product but I recommend shopping around before purchasing it, as the price seems to vary significantly from store to store.
