Used it for about a month, no issues so far.

The case is nicely machined out of aluminum and has a blue LED in the front and it runs cool with no fan.

I have had this hard drive for over a year, and I love it.

Out of the box, you will receive the hard drive, a plastic stand, a USB adapter, a good manual, and the power cord. The drive is VERY well built.

My drive was practically plug and play - just hook it up to your computer, and start working! The drive comes pre-formatted in the Windows format system, NTFS. From reading the description, it may have bloatware. I never got to find out - for my mid-2012 MBP, I just let Time Machine take over with the conversion to HFS (Apple) formatting and backup. If one needs the manual, it is very easy to read (the author's first language was English, a rarity these days) and quite helpful. And as with most electronics, if all else fails, Google and YouTube are always helpful.

Formatting only took a few seconds - the 7,200 RPM and USB 3.0 have proved to be quite impressive. Coping over my 130Gb of photos, audio, applications, and documents took considerably longer, a little over 24 hours. This was due to the 5,400 RPM hard drive in my computer (see below). Since the initial backup, Time Machine only takes a minute or two to update a 1-5 Gb.

The noise generated by this drive is very noticeable, although I'm not particularly bothered by it. The drive has a little blue light on the front that flashes depending on drive usage (similar to the hard drive lights on some older PCs). It rarely becomes warm to the touch, even without a cooling fan.

A few months after I bought the Fantom Drive, I decided to upgrade the hard drive in my Macbook to a Samsung 840 Pro, a solid state drive. As part of this process, I split the Fantom Drive into two partitions: one with the time machine backup, and one with a copy of my hard drive.

This is my 2nd FD drive. The drive runs cool and the USB3 is a big improvement over USB2. The case is nicely machined out of aluminum and has a blue LED in the front and it runs cool with no fan. No complaints, both FD drives have been reliable so far. I have friends with the other popular WD and Segate drives who have experienced failures, so the extra price was justified for me.

I am a big fan of Fantom drives, but this unit is not suitable for my needs. I ordered two of these from Amazon: please note that both units came with a USB 3/2 and eSATA ports in the back but only a USB connector cable. My issue is that I need these drives to always be ready/on. I disabled sleep mode in Windows, but these drives still napped. The problem is that it takes them a long time to wake up....over a minute. This causes issues for Windows Explorer and many applications. I have an older Fantom 4Tb USB3 drive (not 7200RPM disks) which does not have this issue (even when they fall asleep, they wake up in under 15 seconds). I am returning this drive and instead which will downgrade to the slower version which does not have this sleep issue.

I have two other Fantom drives that have been running fine for the last three years, which is why I went with this one when I wanted even more space. It's quiet, fast (and I don't even have a computer that can take advantage of the USB3.0 yet) and has detected fine in every computer I've plugged it into so far.

The only negative I can list is that the USB cable that came with it is pretty short.

I'll write a real review soon. Stars may change. So far, I've only unboxed the drive, but it made me want to put up this quick note.

Amazon reports that this drive is usually bought with "Micro Connectors Superspeed USB 3.0 A to B Cable, (6 Feet)" and, hey, this is USB 3 and who's got one of those cables kicking around so I'd better go buy one. Well, there's one IN THE BOX with the drive. I may have missed it, but I don't see this information anywhere on the product page. So, now you know!

I've installed the free isyncbox software (this is software offered by a website; it is NOT something that comes with the drive) and wanted a new external drive with its own power supply to run constantly as my cloud storage. I ordered this drive because the description says, "A fan-free design for virtually silent operation." Uhm, no. I almost sent the drive back. 7200 rmp makes a MIGHTY vibration. But just before boxing it up, I took a piece of the styrofoam packing to use as a cushion/stand, and the the drive's vibrations are no longer very noticeable (audible).

I got this as a Christmas gift (if you're wondering why I don't have a verified purchase). I wanted it only to store my entire Steam client on, Origin, Guild Wars 2, basically a hard drive for games. Since games take up so much space I decided this was a better solution than upgrading my internal 500gb hard drive.

Yes, you can run Steam from an external hard drive. You can even delete all files except the Steam installer & Steamapps folder and re-install, steam updates, and all downloaded games are still stored.

The hard drive is extremely slick, the base plant keeps its sturdy and the cables are tough. It is slightly on the louder end, but nothing compared to what sound my PC makes (200mm fans). Has USB 2.0/3.0, no eSata but 3.0 is actually slightly faster than eSata and most PC's are guaranteed a usb 3.0 port now a days. I've been using it consistently for a few months and no complaints. My entire PC speed is increased by removing my games from its internal storage and by keeping the games and operating programs separate I find my overall performance is better.

If you are looking for a hard drive to run games from, you need 7200RPM or faster. Anything slower or if you can't use USB 3.0 and only 2.0 you might not want to try this. You could run into a lot of problems running your games if it can't handle the speed. This hard drive has handled everything from Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 3, Guild Wars 2 etc without any hiccups or freezing etc. It's perfect for that extra storage space or just using it like a portable game box like I do.

Now, if you're just getting it as a portable hard drive for photos, videos etc this might not be the best option.
