5.0 out of 5 stars Far Cry with a dash AC = Far Cry 3 December 6, 2012
By Barry
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Deluxe
Purchased last night, the download is about 8Gb plus two 250mb patches. I recommend downloading the patches from Ubisofts website while the game downloads instead of using the farcry updater that the game launches on its own.

I'm currently on a business trip so all I have with me is my 13 inch Mac Book Pro, not intended for gaming but the intel 4000 can play the game. It does take a hit on the frame rate and the lighting is a little messed up with Dx11, so I tried Dx9 and the game crashes. I will be home in a week and be able to play on my desktop so I'm not worried about that. anyways about the game:

I was confused on how to access my deluxe content and played for 3 hours before I figured it out because it wasn't explained to me. You need to activate the game after installing it and then when you launch the game go Options>exclusive content and type you serial in again and you will have access to the content.

The game reminds me of old Assassins Creed(also from Ubisoft) in the form of uncovering more of your map. You need to climb radio towers and hack into them; this will make the map visible. Also you have areas that are influenced by the enemy and you need to take over there camps also like Assassins Creed, once you have influence over that area side missions open and enemys show up less often. This isn't a bad thing because they did it correctly and all the camps and towers have been different so far; so it doesn't feel like I'm doing the same thing over and over again. They aren't copied and pasted throughout the map.

Driving vehicles is a little tricky as the controls are sensitive, its first person and you use WASD to control the vehicle not the mouse.

You need to hunt for animals and use their skins to upgrade your bags and accesories, I suggest you start this early because you can't carry much of anything by default.

The story is good so far, much better than previous installations of this title. In the previous games I got bored pretty quickly, this version has kept me intrigued so far after about 5 hours of play time. The main antagonist Vaas has a pretty funny personality, he's pretty crazy.

The game isn't very difficult on normal difficulty, but you can change this setting at any time you want. When you running around I would watch out for predator anamals as they will come out of nowhere and attack you. The easiest way to kill a tiger/mountain lion is with a shotgun.

I would recommend this game to anyone who likes FPS's and free roam/sand box type games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Far Cry 3 does plenty right, with a little wrong December 7, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Deluxe|Amazon Verified Purchase
First off - I am on the last leg of the campagne, with approx 5 missions left till the game has been completed for the story line. I felt this was enough into the game to write a review that may actually do it justice in my thoughts of it. I was excited by Far Cry 3 after seeing it announced, and kept up with all the pushed release dates and what not, but I was ok because I would rather a game be held back and released working, than a release of a flawed game. So how did it hold up to expectations?

I was thoroughly pleased with this game. In fact, I dare say this is the most I have been into an actual campagne in a long time. This game is a mix of what plenty of games do right, but it gives it an edge. Free roam MASSIVE environment, Radar Towers to unlock map pieces (which is sort of like high points in assassin's creed). You have a wide variety of guns, a decent choice in vehicles, and loads of ways to play the game. You can speed through the missions as fast as you want, or take your time and complete side quest. You can capture rally points that allow you to restock there and use these strongholds as Fast Travel locations, and once you've unlocked a certain base, you can then complete wanted posters on the bulliten board which gives you a small break from the normal quest line as well. You can hanglide, wing suite / parachute (once you unlock it), walk around and stealth kill through the entire game, disable alarms, enable alarms to make things worse. There really is no one set way of completing the game - UNLESS you just go from one way point to the other, in which case there are two ways since your final quest line is a double ending with two potential out comes (Hint - when the game asks are you sure if you are warrior enough for your final challenge, create a second save slot in order to return to that part of the game and finish the alternative ending you did not choose). So that's the story but lets look at presentation.

This is where the game has some major flaws . . . enemys hidden in rocks yet able to blast you, you run through a water fall only to have your screen CONSTANTLY covered in water as you continue forward, and numerous other glitches in the game that are in my thoughts expected when you have so much going on. This is why I docked only one star, but it's such a good game its hard not to give it the full 5 even with these flaws, but once they produce some patches things will get better.

The game utility: OK, so this game utilizes ubisofts own game updater and interface to load the game, 4 times since I have started working on this game I have had to hard reset my laptop in order to get it to unfreeze (no ctrl, alt, delete even!). This is not an issue with the game as much as it is with the game loader. You can not use this download key provided from amazon on steam, which is a real shame in my mind. I'm not sure how well the access to the game is offline (if there even is an offline mode), so I can not comment on that. However, other than this terribly buggy interface, the rest of the games interface is well scripted, flawless with a 360 controller hooked up, and runs amazing on Ultra with my i7 and Nvidia GX650 2gb graphics card pushing it. I have seen no real lag issues, drop in frame rate, only those buggy moments which have not slowed down gameplay, just hindered it slightly.

The game also gives you a reason to go out and hunt. You need to kill plenty of wildlife to upgrade your carry compacity from everything from guns to medicine. When you get to the higher level items to craft, you will need to go into shark infested waters with a sniper rifle, and start skinning sharks. Just be warned that it is not as easy as it sounds. Sharks drop down to the floor over time, and do not suspend in the water. More sharks come into the area after you've killed one, so be prepared for some trial and error to see what works for you. You MUST be out of the water on a rock or boat to kill a shark.

Overall you're looking at:

Gameplay: 8.75 average
Graphics: 9.5
Story: 9.5
Interface: 7
Replay Value: 9

If you enjoyed Far Cry 2, you will love Far cry 3. If you are new to the series, you will enjoy it if you have that exploration mode in you for gaming. Think Uncharted meets assassins creed meets borderlands meets dead island meets skyrum. And you pretty much have it.

Enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Potential but some things that couldv'e improved December 5, 2012
By Twinkey
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Deluxe
Well let's see i guess i'll start by saying some good things. I LOVE KILLING EVERYTHING WITH THE BOW

Overall i enjoyed what i have played thus far, i've put about 15 hours into it, and this review is based on my play so far. starting the game the story is fresh and exciting. The map is HUGE, I have maybe traveled about 30% of the map, staying relatively close to the main quest, I give this a 5 stars the sheer size of the map. I love exploring and i love sandbox games where i get lost in time hunting animals or just adventuring around. Even though i rated 3 stars i thoroughly enjoy the main story thus far. Some of the old Chinese ruins are very creative and at times breathtaking, something that makes this game acquire a higher replay value. So the summary of the good is that i enjoy the history they put into "Rook's Island" the voice acting of the characters are captivating and live-like and at times you get somewhat emotionally involved in whats going on. the HUGE map, like 20 different skinnable animals, the komodo dragons are awesome the vehicles though the driving is not even close to the feel of real cars, they are exactly what i like in sandbox games, easy to control/drift.

Now some of the things i find annoying and places they could have improved; as far as the trading and skinning of animals i feel like their should've been a better system. the guns are cheap compared to how much you make so fast, the only thing you can buy from the stores are guns ammo and maps, which for the guns if you unlock radio beacons they become available to you anyways which makes money pointless in my eyes, which also eliminates the reward from cash quests because your more doing it for the experience points then anything else. With skinning animals, they are just used to make weapon pouches ammo pouches.... a larger loot bag. but in the first 2 hours of game play i have everything but maybe 2 items that are craft-able left with skins. If you are going to make the ability to do these things, don't make it so limited you might as well take it out of the game.

There is no risk factor in this game! LAME!!!!!!!!! where is the suspense? I LOSE NOTHING WHEN I DIE? I BUY 1 GUN AND HAVE IT FOREVER? granted you have to continuously resupply with ammo (not too frequent) i like buying a gun and feeling the reward of having it, and the risk of losing it, resulting in my choices being more thought out... granted that's not everyone, but at least on the hardest difficulty make it so!

The AI is below decent as far as "intelligent", on the hardest difficulty i can jump around and kill everyone like a 13 year old plays Halo. It's more challenging to sneak around without causing alarm which i love but they couldv'e improved on the difficulty its almost too easy, at times it is.

So overall i would wait until this game drops to like 45 bucks or something if you are really picky about how your game plays otherwise in my opinion as far as replay value i think it is worth the 60 bucks
