4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie
This movie does several things pretty well. First, Drew Barrymore's character is really well drawn. She's sensitive, consumed by her own emotions, and, well, horny. Unlike the teenagers in so much of today's cinema, Drew's character has a total lack of attitude, she's fueled by feelings, not cliches. This is all done in a subtle way, and that makes her very likable...

3.0 out of 5 stars Creepy B movie with great cast
Drew is a sexually curious 15 year old stranded in some trailer park with her dad. She encounters many bizarre characters and has several eye opening experiences.Nothing too deep, but a fun low budget sleeper with some nice scares and a scene stealing performance by the awesome Susan Tyrrel as the sleazebag trailer park manager.

This is all done in a subtle way, and that makes her very likable and sympathetic. Also, the "far from home" atmosphere is created nicely. You really do feel as if you're in the last place on earth, with all these oddball characters either trying to get out or else slowly losing their sanity from the isolation and desolation. These things contrast well and give the film a really uneasy feeling. The totally naive girls put in a dangerous place - but of course she doesn't know it's dangerous. It could so easily descend into melodrama, but it doesn't because of the skillfulness with which it is crafted. The other characters are also well done - everyone has a very definite personality and they all add together to create the atmosphere - exactly what you might expect to find in such a place, but of course you've never thought about it before because who would want to?

Overall, an effective film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie You've Never Heard Of, May 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Far From Home [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Far From Home is by far one of my favorite movies with such classic lines as 'Did I scare you?' and 'Where are you going? We were playing keep-away!' The reason many people didn't like it,though, was because of the uncomfortable desert setting. But the story is full of subtle details that will require multiple viewings to catch.Sure the movie has one or two script flaws(beware the 'Have you ever...done it' scene and try to ignore some of Drew's narrations)and a poorly-placed sex scene (I'd rather see Drew swimming anyday) but, thanks to a great story and a superb cast,I think this is one of the best movies noone has ever heard of.

A very good movie, wrongly crucisfied by the critics. I was on the edge of my seat watching this film, and you could never tell what was going to happen. Drew Barrymore proved in this film she was going to be the great actress she turned out to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film About A Girl Growing Up, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Far From Home [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Drew Barrymore plays Joleen Cox,a girl who wants her dad Charlie to realize that she's "turning 14 tomorrow, not 12." This film does a great job epitomizing white trash and is a great suspense movie for anyone who can handle the scorching desert atmosphere. The movie has a few script flaws made by Drew, but they are made up for by the outstanding performances of Richard Masur as an old hippie and Anthony Rapp(before he did Dazed&Confused and RENT),namely his scenes on the microwave relay and his sweet moment with Drew on a scorching desert plane. If you get this movie for any reason at all,get it for just the fish-sticks scene with Susan Tyrrel and Andras Jones as the ultimate white trash mother and son.

This was a great movie with a great cast. When you watch it you have a feeling you know who the killer is, but your not sure enough to say anyhting till the end when you find out, this move has great suspense. Plus you get to see the gorgious Andras Jones, and Drew Barymore is a spectacular actress.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weird Happenings., July 20, 2008
This review is from: Far From Home (DVD)
Returning from a vacation, a father who knows nothing has run out of gas somewhere in Nevada on the way back to L. A. Charlie Cox has his preteen daughter along who is about to have a birthday. A the Exxon, the manager says they are out of gas as there has been no delivery. They usually kill the stranded owners and take parts from the cars to resell. The father and daughter are deserted and stuck in a trailer part with typical occupants. "Everything is about money": the familiar Sixties complaint from an old flower child; they don't work so look down on money and those who make it legitimately. Personal commment: No wonder they were drug users.

Joleen, the preteen girl is dressed in a black bikini, with a figure like mine. She is exactly like Dolly Parton's "Joleen." On Chuck's birthday (also Joleen's twelveth), she was saved from Jimmy's rage by Pinky who is mean sometimes. Both teenaged boys were s. repressed and consequently killed their mothers, blaming them for this defect. It almost was fate my way, but Justin had a conscience. Pinky lost his computer lab in an abandoned warehouse up on the hill (looked like Simi Valley) to violence and disaster.

After a quiet twilight, there was an almost-full moon as they celebrate birthdays, to be followed by a vertigionous remote control toy truck, which caused chaos. Amy and her mother were doxies as a hobby. The scene reflected in sunglasses was effective. How is it t hat someone can be right and still so wrong, as the Norfolk Southern train crossed as they return home into the sunset. "I trusted you." Pinky stole and read her journal, playing keepaway, hide and seek frun, too. "Here I come," in a sandstorm, and "Come Out Wherever You Are.

A quirky unbelievable snuff movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!, April 20, 2001

This review is from: Far From Home [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Wow, this was an edge of your seat guessing game. I was so interested with the plot and was suprised all the way through. It is a nail biter. Drew Barrymore is the perfect example of teenagers today and Andras Jones was wonderful as the chilling "Jimmy" a beaten obsessed "manaic". Andras gave me goose bumps all the way through. Anthony Rapp was also very good in a supporting role. This is an all together great film, and i recommed it with the highest it can recieve 5 stars.
