If you like intriguing books about wilderness and how people survive on their own, then youíll like this book about Gabe and Raymond and how they survive on their wild adventure in the Northern Canadian wilderness. This book is about Gabe and Raymond; two teenage boys fighting to survive in Northern Canada. Their plane goes off a cliff, and the pilot dies. They were starving and hadnít had any food for days. When Raymondís uncle goes out hunting for a moose he has a heart attack and dies as well. I liked this book a lot. It started out slow, but picked up quickly. I liked it because it was a good action adventure, with a lot of twists and turns. I also liked the descriptive writing of the author. My favorite part of the book was when Raymond killed a mountain sheep with an ax. I also like when the winter bear shows up and catches Gabe and Raymond in a tree.

I bought this book to use in a literature unit with two 8th-grade homeschoolers, one an avid reader, and the other a very reluctant reader. The book was a hit with both! The reluctant reader even started reading ahead on his own because he wanted to find out how the story turned out. The story stimulated some great discussions on literary technique (foreshadowing, cliffhangers), social and cultural ideas, wilderness survival, making choices, and gaining maturity through adversity. There were also lots of opporunities to expand the boys' vocabulary.
We highly recommend this book!!

Far North,
This review is from: Far North (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the best survival book since hatchet. The characters are likeable and it has a good plot. Unlike the earlier reviewer, who said they had everything to survive, they did have all the right gear, but they were not experienced outdoorsmen. They had a gun, but no ammo.(until later, and even at that they had only three bullets...) This story is realistic and enjoyable. I hope that someone wll make a movie out of it...If you are a survival/action/adventure book reader, or any book reader for that matter, I would read this book. Its educational, realistic, and a really enjoyable read.

A Kid's Review

This was a very intriguing book. I read it for the Battle Of The Books for our school. I didnt really want to read it, but it turned out to be a fantastic book. It talks about Gabe, a teenager from Texas that moved to a Canadian boarding school with his romate Raymond, who is from a Dene Village. I wont spoil it, but they end up crashing at Virginia falls and Johnny Raven helps them survive, for the most part. Johnny is a Dene that doesnt speak english so he communicates though actions. When you read at least the first two chapters, you will be addicted.

Far North,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Far North (Mass Market Paperback)
Far North is about a boy from Texas who goes up north. He sees his dad there and he arranges for a bush-pilot to take him around sight seeing. His roommate decided to drop out and go home, and an old man needs medical attention, so they fly on the plane too. They crash and the pilot drowns. From then on out it is a life struggle. The old man used to live off the land so he got Gabe (the boy from Texas) and Raymond (his roommate) through it. Then he died. After that they decided they had to raft out.
The main character in the the book is Gabe Rogers. He is short and stocky, unlike his dad who is tall and stocky. He moved from Texas. He is very strong and, he is very bull headed. He didn't argue much but he always thought other people were wrong in the book. I'm easy going so it seemed like he wanted everyone to do what he wanted to do. I liked this book because I love the outdoors and especially the north. This book had everything from grizzly bears to moose, caribou, and goat hunting. My favorite part was when they were rafting down river. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the outdoors. |
