Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Journalist, filmmaker and photographer Benson follows his book Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes with an even more stellar array of astronomical photographs that offer glorious views of space, moving successively from close to home to the outermost regions of the universe, moving simultaneously farther from Earth and farther back in time. Benson's emphasis on the correlation between geological time and astronomical distance sets this book far apart from others. Light rays, he says, move like ripples in a pond... so vast that the ripples extending out from each event take thousands, millions, or even billions of years to echo off its banks. Light reaching Earth now from the Witch Head nebula, some 740 light-years distant, was generated in the 14th century. Elsewhere, remote galactic clusters, aggregate bonfires shining across the blackness of deep time, cast light as old as Pangaea, the Earth's ancient supercontinent, which broke up to create today's continents. Benson illuminates the vast scale of the universe and its workings with large-scale quasi-cinematic photos that reveal scintillating stars, galaxies and Rorschach-like nebulae in their true colors. The 228 color photos are spectacular and enhanced with three eight-page gatefolds. (Nov.)

When being outside under the starry sky isn't practical, browsing through this book is more than an adequate substitute for the real thing. I'd considered buying National Geographics' book about the accomplishments of the Hubble telescope, but after comparing it to this book, I was absolutely taken with the quality of the writing, the fabulous illustrations, and the especially the quality of the paper and printing.

This book is full of page after page of jaw-droppingly gorgeous images of our universe. What's better, they are accompanied by text and close-ups that clarify what we are seeing and put them in context. There is no better photographic tour of the skies; it's the kind of book you'll want to return to again and again.

A beautiful book, filled eye popping photos. The large format is very welcome, since the photos are so details. One can enjoy this book for many years. It is also great inspiration for visual astronomers, when the sky cloudy or spoiled with light pollution.

Stunning imagery...how amazing a universe we live in. This book sits in my office and not a day goes by where someone doesn't open it, comment, or just plain stare for a while (including me!). Highly recommended.

Far Out is full of stunningly beautiful photographs and great text that not only explains the photos but puts them in wondrous context - what was happening here on Earth when the light we're seeing left, say, the Tarantula Nebula (to name just one massive object you can get lost in). If you're reading this, you're unlikely ever to float around out there to see these things, and we can't see them in any detail from Earth. Benson's lovingly assembled book of great Hubble photos may be the single best way to experience the world beyond our atmosphere (and thus to better understand the world within it).
