5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps me humble
When being outside under the starry sky isn't practical, browsing through this book is more than an adequate substitute for the real thing. 1.0 out of 5 stars Coffee table book
This volume follows the worst tradition of Abrams "coffee table" art books. Much too heavy to hold and read and I found it impossible to relate the pretentious text to the magnificent illustrations. I still remember vividly my first view of the solar system in the work of Chesley Bonestell!!

When being outside under the starry sky isn't practical, browsing through this book is more than an adequate substitute for the real thing. I'd considered buying National Geographics' book about the accomplishments of the Hubble telescope, but after comparing it to this book, I was absolutely taken with the quality of the writing, the fabulous illustrations, and the especially the quality of the paper and printing.

This book is full of page after page of jaw-droppingly gorgeous images of our universe. What's better, they are accompanied by text and close-ups that clarify what we are seeing and put them in context. There is no better photographic tour of the skies; it's the kind of book you'll want to return to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous art book of outer space, January 5, 2010
This review is from: Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle (Hardcover)
The author quotes William Blake: "Eternity is in love with the productions of time."

Benson's excellent essays, the incredible photographs (many of which he has reprocessed to make them truer to reality), the wonderful printing and binding, all make this an art and science book that I am delighted to keep on our living room table.

A wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - The Large Format was needed, January 6, 2010
This review is from: Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle (Hardcover)
A beautiful book, filled eye popping photos. The large format is very welcome, since the photos are so details. One can enjoy this book for many years. It is also great inspiration for visual astronomers, when the sky cloudy or spoiled with light pollution.

Stunning imagery...how amazing a universe we live in. This book sits in my office and not a day goes by where someone doesn't open it, comment, or just plain stare for a while (including me!). Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Far Out: A Space-Time Chronicle (Hardcover)
Far Out is full of stunningly beautiful photographs and great text that not only explains the photos but puts them in wondrous context - what was happening here on Earth when the light we're seeing left, say, the Tarantula Nebula (to name just one massive object you can get lost in). If you're reading this, you're unlikely ever to float around out there to see these things, and we can't see them in any detail from Earth. Benson's lovingly assembled book of great Hubble photos may be the single best way to experience the world beyond our atmosphere (and thus to better understand the world within it).
