Book Description

August 26, 2004
"We all know what Rainbow is," began Lamondois. "Rainbow is a planet colonized by science and designed for physical experiments." "The Far Rainbow was written at one breath, it is full of dynamics and genuine dramatism." - Literary Gazette "Science-fiction stories by the Strugatsky brothers are philosophical pieces. They are full of action but each action is clearly imbued with speculation." - Neva Magazine "Take the Far Rainbow, for instance. 'Authentic' is the word, and this is rather unusual where science fiction is concerned." - The Young Guard Magazine The brothers Boris and Arkady Strugatsky have chosen different careers. Arkady is a linguist and Boris an astronomer. Perhaps it is this divergence of interest which has helped them to describe the world of the far future so vividly. The brothers Strugatsky are among the most prominent Soviet science-fiction writers. They have written a number of works in the genre.

This review is from: Far Rainbow (Paperback)
There's a great deal of good things to say about this book and the writing style of brothers Strugatsky, but what captures one as an experienced sci-fi reader is what they, authors, leave for the reader to think about. Despite the hardest conflicts that get in the way of human exploration of Universe, and the best arguments, the authors somehow bring their reader yet to another crossroad that poses both, a new question and a solution; to remind us once more that, without persistence of a thirsty mind, and sometimes hard mistakes, progress and knowledge are impossible. The crossroad is what the book (like most of their books) is all about - questioning, occasionally with an amazing precise sense of humor, the very foundation of humanity, with it's doubts and achievements. This reading is very deep, and the more you read it, the more depth is revealed (read it 5 times myself, both in Russian and English). Would not mention any details, because it is a spoiler:) The translation is great, and will suit anyone looking for a mind adventure. I sincerely hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Poka!
