5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and intelligent!
Mixing great artwork with excellent imagination and humor, Gary Larson's Far Side galleries, including this one, is a stroke of genius. Great writing, too!

1.0 out of 5 stars MOST TOXIC INK I EVER ENCOUNTERED IN PRINTED MATERIAL
About one minute of exposure to the inside print ink (could be paper too, but was probably the ink) gave me a migraine within a couple of minutes, that lasted more than a 24-hour day.

I am severely chemically sensitive to multiple varieties of chemicals (mostly man-made synthetics), but was never exposed to ink this toxic, not in newsprint, laser copy, or...

There isnt much to say in a review of this book, except that if you buy this book i GUARANTEE you'll buy the other 4!!! There absolutely excelent. The funniest cartoon of all of them is the one with a chimpanzee picking stuff off her husbands back and saying "Another blonde hair, eh? Doing a little extra research with that Jane Goodall tramp?"....and thats just the tip of the iceberg! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I AM A LARSEN JUNKIE!!! I NEED MORE!!!, July 17, 2002
This review is from: The Far Side Gallery 5 (Paperback)
Larsen is the world's greatest cartoonist. Too bad he retired. I have envelopes filled with his cartoons clipped out of the newspaper (10+ years ago!) that I still can't bear to throw away. So I suppose this book was a good idea. It will take up less space than several bulging envelopes.

For younger people who can't remember his cartoons in the paper every day, you need to hurry up and start collecting his books so you can always be within arm's length of a smile or a laugh.

Also, I love the story about the "Jane Goodall Cartoon"

5.0 out of 5 stars The Far Side is Life, January 2, 2002

This review is from: The Far Side Gallery 5 (Paperback)
We've all seen Far Side cartoons, stuck on office doors and cubicle walls, and said, "I don't get it." Then we've learned a little and come back, this time laughing raucously. This book is filled with all sorts of Far Side gems, most of which any average yutz can find hilarious. If you like the Far Side, or if you just like a glimpse at that which is odd, warped, and mind-bending (or, in other terms, Larsonesque), you should have this book.

Granted by the 5th gallery there are a number of jokes being recycled and cartoons that appear in the other galleries, you will never find a cartoonist like Larson so just buy it for the laughs and intelligence he portrays with a few crude drawings, couple lines of dialogue, and odd placement of humans and animals in unlikely situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, March 11, 2005

Here's another omnibus edition of Gary Larson's weird, wacky and utterly hilarious cartoons. To enter Larson's world is to enter a world where animals have meaningful conversations, bugs make their homes in nice suburban houses, flies fly planes etc, etc. Certainly not the mainstream kind of cartoon but for anyone who likes 'off the wall' type humour this is a 'must buy'. Absolutely hilarious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great funny fanatic is Gary Larson, April 4, 2001
A Kid's Review

Gary Larson is the funniest drawer I have ever seen. I got the desk 2001 calendar and got hooked on the comics right away. I now own Far side galleries 4 & 5. I am looking forward to buying more books. Buy this book if you enjoy insane yet funny sophisticated comics. Jake S.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of a cartoonist genius, September 20, 2007
This review is from: The Far Side Gallery 5 (Paperback)
As a satirical cartoonist, Gary Larson has no peer. His biting and hilarious insights often require a great deal of thought before you get the point. If you are not familiar with the reference used to create the cartoon, it is unlikely that you will get the point.
For example, on page 42 there is a cartoon showing deer engaged in an excavation project with a mounted cowboy observing them while perched on a hill. The caption is "Where the deer and the antelope work." If you do not know about the song, "Home on the range", then you will not understand the joke. Another example on the same page shows three frogs lying among cattails holding wine bottles. The caption here is "Yeah, I remember Jerry. Good friend of mine ... You know, I never understood a single word he said, but he always had some mighty fine wine." Once again, if you are not familiar with the song "Joy to the World" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, the joke will most likely pass you by.
Gary Larson is a genius, where that quality is manifested in ways that are twisted, yet profound. This book is hilarious.

Gary Larson's off-sided humour is definatley one of a kind. If you only laugh once, it's worth it!! (But, I feel you'll find a lot more than one funny!) TRUST ME!!!
