5.0 out of 5 stars Varied and elegant, December 13, 2007
This collection presents many visions of the photographic figure. They feature outdoor backgrounds, or architecture, or studio scenes. They present models singly (a man or woman), or in couples. Sunlit or somber; color or B&W; crisp, gauzy, or grained - each variation says something new. I'm quite amazed at all the different ways the human animal can be seen by the human animal.

The drawback in this collection is its sameness of models: twenty-something, and European in coloring. I keep wondering where all the other people are. Within that range, though, Farber conveys the classic sense of grace and elegance in figure, something I enjoy immensely.

Photographers will draw extra pleasure from this collection. The last section reproduces each picture again, smaller and B&W, but with additional notes about camera, lens, film, lighting, and composition. I would have liked at least a name for each model or image, or maybe just a page number to help me talk about the pictures - but maybe they're to be seen and not said. Well, that's fine too.

2.0 out of 5 stars A photobook with advice....to the photographer (himself), May 5, 2003

This review is from: Farber Nudes (Hardcover)
The book I have is published by Amphoto, New York in 1983. The size is 230x310mm and it has hard covers. It is externally well made and the book binding is good, sadly the quality of the printed pages is not the best possible.(paper and print) Pages are un-numbered and the photos have no name. The author is Robert Farber, text and photographs.

It contains mostly colour photographs (appr. 100) with only less than 20 monochrome. The selection of pictures is typical of photo magazines and calendars. Most models are female and some are male, also couples appear.

The contents are divided in chapters after a brief introductory text; Advice to the beginner, The elegant nude, The romantic nude, The graphic nude, Notes on photographs and techniques and finally Acknowledgments. (gives you the drift of it...)

I suppose this is a sort of inspirational "how to" book providing a glimpse of what could be tried with a camera. The "notes" -chapter provide lighting tips with hand drawn sketches and text around some of the work contained within. Also camera, film and other technical information.

This book sells secondhand for about 5 USD, and for that price (about the same as a issue of a monthly photo magazine might cost) it is certainly worth the purchase. You can then give it away...for some reason this book has remained in my personal library since 1983.....Does anyone need a photo book : )
