I have some older Farberware Pro knives that I love. They're forged and have lasted years. The handles are solid, and the tangs (the part of the blade that connects to the handle) run full length of the handle and are riveted in solid. These reminded me of them, so it was a plus in the purchase decision.

I also have some cheapo Farberware knives that have short tangs and all-plastic handles. The handles have fake "rivets" in them, but they don't attach to anything but plastic. Those knives dull quickly and the handles break when you put pressure on the blade, resulting in dangerous risks. They aren't forged and dull quickly. I can't fathom why anybody would spend hundreds of dollars on knives (or even thousands, OMG!!), but DON'T go cheap an buy that $25 set unless that's all you can afford.

THIS set falls somewhere between. They have decent, sturdy handles with full tangs; you can see metal all the way from end to end. They aren't going to break. But the squared-off shape make them a little less comfortable than I prefer. You don't want round-handled knives that will get slippery and spin in your hands, but square corners is just cheap manufacturing, not smart ergonomic design.

It says forged, so we'll see. You can forge cheap metal too. They're sharp right now, time will tell how much sharpening they need. Since it's nearly impossible for the consumer to sharpen serrated blades, you have to take extra care not to bang them around, dull them up, or shove them into your silverware cup. We put all our knives in a cup before and after washing, until they can be put back in the block.

As to the quality of the metal, I've read reviews about them rusting and tarnishing in the dishwasher. Well, duh?

I bought this Farberware Forged Cutlery set and love this product. My rate is a 10 for this product. The reason I bought this set is my daughter has had this set about five years. She is very hard on her cutlery and does everything but garden with it. She puts in the dishwasher and the cutlery is still sharp. She is my testimony on why I wanted this set. I looked up Amazon and was so excited the set was available. Great price and love the free shipping.
