Wood handles attached with three traditional brass rivets distinguish the knives in this 13-piece cutlery set. Knife blades are stamped rather than forged and the knives do not have bolsters or full tangs. However, the blades are high-carbon stainless steel--perfectly adequate for novice cooks. This set includes an 8-inch chef's knife for chopping and mincing, an 8-inch slicer for carving meat and poultry, a 5-inch utility knife for making sandwiches, a 3-inch paring knife for cleaning and peeling fruits and vegetables, and six 4-1/2-inch steak knives for cutting meat into bite-size pieces at the table. Accompanying the knives are an 8-inch steel for keeping edges aligned and 8-inch kitchen scissors. Everything fits into a hardwood storage block. Because of the wood handles, these knives need to be hand washed. All parts of the set carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
