5.0 out of 5 stars Good price/good quality/good kettle
You don't need to spend [price] on a tea kettle! This was an excellent buy (and I got it for the higher price of [price]!!). The price can't be beat for the quality. The kettle sings loudly when ready and the lid comes off for easy cleaning. It's durable and nice looking as well. I've bought other kettles I haven't been nearly as happy with and they cost more. 1.0 out of 5 stars Black Goo and Funny Smell
The design is ok. Nothing fancy, nothing different, it looks just like any other teakettle. It works fine. The handle doesn't get hot, and the whistle isn't too loud. I gave it one star because of the black goo that came inside. I washed it before using it, and after the water was done boiling, I saw little black particles floating in the water and the water smelled...

The kettle sings loudly when ready and the lid comes off for easy cleaning. It's durable and nice looking as well. I've bought other kettles I haven't been nearly as happy with and they cost more. And there is no enamel to chip off like those "fancy" kettles often have. One great feature this kettle can claim is a very smooth pouring action--no dribbles and drips.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great item at a great price, June 30, 2002

This teakettle is just wonderful. I love how the top opens for easy cleaning. I have fairly large hands and find it easy to get my hand in there and clean. A must have for me. The lid snaps right back on nice and tight. The whistle works great. My girls just love to hear the sound. The pour spout works great. Just push the lever and it opens up for you to pour. you take your finger off and it goes right back down by itself. A geat item at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars put the kettle on!, May 24, 2003

It's not as shiny as it was when it first emerged from its box, but that's no wonder -- this teakettle has scarcely left the stove since I received it. I use it almost daily to make coffee and tea. The design is excellent -- the handle stays cool, and the removable lid allows easy cleaning of the interior. It is very sturdily made, and doesn't seem as though it would dent easily. It's large enough to hold water for a whole pot of tea if you need it to, and can quickly boil enough water for a single cup in no time -- very handy to have around the kitchen, and with its neat retro shape, something you won't mind leaving out on the stove.

I wanted a tea kettle with a handle that stays cool and holds plenty of water. This one is the ticket, and it is priced great!

1.0 out of 5 stars Black Goo and Funny Smell, January 8, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Classic Sonoma 2-Quart Whistling Stainless Steel Teakettle (Kitchen)
The design is ok. Nothing fancy, nothing different, it looks just like any other teakettle. It works fine. The handle doesn't get hot, and the whistle isn't too loud. I gave it one star because of the black goo that came inside. I washed it before using it, and after the water was done boiling, I saw little black particles floating in the water and the water smelled weird. The smell may have been caused by that black stuff. I washed the pot again and saw more black stuff coming out. I took one piece and noticed it was gooey. I checked if there was something that had melted when I boiled the water, but I saw the kettle was intact. I boiled more water and again I saw the black goo floating in the water. I have boiled water 7 times and have washed the pot 4 times, and there is still goo floating in the water, they are almost unnoticeable, like very tiny dots, but they are there. At least the funny smell is gone. I don't know what that black goo is or what's causing it or where it's coming from. I'm afraid it may contain dangerous metals or chemicals that can be harmful. If I keep seeing black goo, I'm sending it back. I think I've learned my lesson. When it comes to buying cookware, it's better to buy good quality. It's not worth jeopardizing your health to save a few bucks.
Update: After washing it two more times and boiling water one more time I got rid of the goo. And I've noticed that the handle gets very hot when I fill it all the way up.

This kettle is very sleek and loud enough to be heard. The handle has a tendency to get a little warm, but not too hot to touch. Very easy to clean. The opening in the top also makes it easy to clean the inside too. Overall....a very good buy...

2.0 out of 5 stars Styling trumps ergonomics, October 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Farberware Classic Sonoma 2-Quart Whistling Stainless Steel Teakettle (Kitchen)
It does what it's supposed to do - it boils water, and it has a loud whistle. And Amazon's price is quite reasonable.

But the handle isn't quite up to snuff. First, it gets hot, hot enough that I need a hotpad when it's been filled to the fill line. The finger latch also gets hot, and it's very awkward to operate with a hotpad.

Second, when I'm pouring boiling water, holding the spout cover open with the finger latch, as I tip the kettle forward to pour out more and more water, the position of the spout moves UNDER my hand, so that hot steam rises and hits my hand. I'd move my hand further back on the handle, out of the way of the steam, but then I wouldn't be able to reach the finger latch to hold the spout open.

Don't the people who design these things ever USE them???

I'd return this, but, sad to say, its ergonomics aren't any worse than other, more expensive tea kettles that I've tried.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain kettle for smooth-tops, September 22, 2004

Unlike many similar but more expensive kettles, the rolled seam at the bottom of the kettle does _not_ hold the bottom up off a smooth-top range. It heats water quickly, handle stays cool, and is the right size for a full pot of tea. There may be better kettles for gas ranges, which apparently can heat the handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent water boiler, May 26, 2003

I bought mine as a gold box offer and am very pleased with it so far. My concerns about a rolled seam below the water-line proved unjustified. The lid is large enough for someone to reach into the kettle to clean and inspect for lime build-up. The lid on mine snaps closed tightly and does not leak steam, but I suppose it could leak if dropped and damaged. The whistle is loud (which means there is no steam leakage past the lid). The kettle has a flat bottom that is below the seam, so it will work well on an electric stove, even one of those Corning glass-top heating elements. I use a gas stove, and can maintain boiling water with the flame turned down to where it is nearly extinguished, so the kettle is fairly efficient at holding heat even though it is not insulated in any way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Tiburon..., November 30, 2003
By
This review is from: Farberware Classic Sonoma 2-Quart Whistling Stainless Steel Teakettle (Kitchen)
This kettle is very similar to the quality Tiburon model yet has a more convenient "trigger" for opening the cap. Highly recommended, especially at Amazon's low price. Whistling feature works great for me. No complaints. And removal top enables relatively easy cleaning.
