5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent knife set, better than I expected
I looked all over for a knife set that would suit my needs. I am a petite woman, so it's true that the knives are made smaller which allows for greater control and efficiency. I also like that the blades are not set in a wooden handle, preventing the blades from loosening over time. This set is very sharp, beautiful, and it comes in a custom wood block.

1.0 out of 5 stars knives rust in dishwasher
I purchased this knife block and then returned it for the same item because mine would rust every time I put them in the dishwasher. The company asssured me this never happened before and sent me out a new set only to do the same thing. I have to brillo the rust off when they come out of the dishwasher. Would not recommend these unless you want to do the same!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product, June 24, 2004
I have owned a Farberware knife set for years, and based on the above description can see that this product is similar to the one I own. The nice thing about these knives is the way they feel in your hand. You know you are holding a quality knife, that is well balanced and holds a sharp edge for a long time. I also like how the molded handles do not allow water or food particles to get under the handles and cause rust and bactoeria build up, as in wooden handled kitchen knives. The wooden block for this knife set is well made and will look good on your kitchen counter for years. The block makes accessing your knives convenient, and safer than digging through a utility drawer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerously bad., February 10, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Farberware Elite 10-Piece Knife Block Set, Black Block (Kitchen)
If you are considering this set because it's cheap and you are looking for something to "start" your kitchen with, don't do it.

I purchased this set several months ago for $40 and I have found it to be a waste of money. I'm a "college cook", meaning that I'm not very advanced, I can make a few things here and there. I purchased the set because I had just moved and needed knives and really just needed aneveryday use knife for chopping veggies, cutting some meat, etc. Unfortunately I figured, "ooh more is better".

These are my main concerns:

1) Poor blade quality - This is my biggest concern. I was cutting up some potatoes earlier using the biggest knife in the set and I had to apply two-handed pressure to cut through it...which is dangerous because then there is nothing stabilizing the food while you are applying pressure with a sharp object.

The knife has huge serrated edges, which seems to cause food to stick to the blade. I find myself wiping off carrot and celery chunks more often than I'd like. It's hard to chop quickly (then again, maybe it's my technique) because the serrated edges tend to "catch" the food rather than slicing through.

2) It has no wooden handle. While it looks nice, the steel
handle is dangerous because it's slippery when wet. I noticed this when I went to chop up veggies after washing them in the sink.

3) The blades rust very quickly. I'm a lazy person, so I have a tendency to rinse the knife and leave it in the sink rather than washing and hand drying it immediately. In 24 hours, I've seen rust developed on a knife that I washed but left on the counter to air dry.

I definitely wish I'd spent $40 on a single knife, rather than buying a set of knives that are frighteningly bad to use.
