A Beautiful Classic, December 31, 2000
This review is from: Farberware FSU122 22-Cup Electric Urn (Kitchen)
I am a fan of percolated coffee. For meetings, etc.,there's really no substitute for these larger-than-normal machines. However, I replaced my 12-cup Farberware percolator with one of these. I have the little 4-cup model I use on mornings I work, 'cause it makes 2 big mugs, one for home and one for the road. However, I used to find that when I had people over, the 12-cup always seemed to hold just enough for one round. So, I replaced it with this model. This machine is advertised as brewing between 12 and 22 cups. It truly works well with only 12 cups if that's what you need! So, I can use it to substitute for my old 12-cup, and can double the output when I need it.
As can be seen, it's an elegant machine, considered by some as a modern kitchen classic. The shiny stainless construction looks appropriate for any setting. The quality of the coffee brewed is superb. Unlike other urn-type machines I've owned, this one doesn't burn coffee; it can stay for 2-4 hours and still taste like coffee.
This is a heavy-duty machine that stands taller than the average home machine. It's no problem in my large kitchen. I use it ordinarily every weekend and for any gatherings during the week, so I actually store mine in a cabinet until needed.
The price is high compared with some of the cheaper urn-type machines, but the better quality of construction is quickly evident on cursory examination. It's easy to pay $100 for a home drip-type, one that certainly will not last as long as this machine. I've been using it for several months and enjoy it more with each use.
By the way, I grind my own coffee with a Braun, set on the coarsest setting. This machine works well without a filter; if I'm planning on leaving the coffee for more than an hour I use the folding-type paper filter available in most grocery stores. It fits perfectly and certainly makes cleanup easier.
Look on this beautiful Farberware as an investment that you'll have for many years to come, and the price falls in line.

Too Bad!, February 28, 2003
This review is from: Farberware FSU122 22-Cup Electric Urn (Kitchen)
I used this unit on a very moderate basis for about a year and a half and then it stopped working properly. Naturally, the warranty had expired. I called the customer service number to ask about paid repair service and was told that there were no authorized repair stations and in fact, it couldn't be repaired. They did offer to sell me another at a reduced price which wa more than I paid for the unit initially. To sum it up, it worked well while working but didn't stand up and then, regardless of my willingness to pay, it can't be repaired. Seems to me that a unit of this cost should last for a long time and repairs should be possible.

Not reliable, January 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Farberware FSU122 22-Cup Electric Urn (Kitchen)
This coffee maker barely lasted 4 months. When it worked it was great, but now it is pretty useless. The thermostat must be out because it heats for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. I can no longer make coffee with it. I would not recommend this item.
