This is a handly sharpener for all knives and is one of the best non electric ones. It is easy to hold and does a good job on all the knives I have tried on it. Even for a quick touch-up it works well. Great for the price.

Style Name: Sharpener
The sharpener is made from a split plastic mold. Mine split when I put pressure on it from extended use. I epoxied back together but I think the ceramic insert lost it's availability to sharpen.

I've switched back to the old fashioned way using a whetstone.

This sharpener seems to be doing a decent job of keeping my knives in shape. I don't get the impression that it would be the right tool for a major sharpness restoration job, but if you use it regularly it does pretty well.

I picked one of these up based strictly on price. I am not really 'into' knives and I have no other sharpeners to compare this to, but I think this 'no-frills' product has done a darn good job on my kitchen knives. I have a couple Santuko (sp?) knives I bought in the past year and it brought these right back into like-new condition. Most impressive though, was an older chef's knife that I've had for probably 20 years, which for the most part has been useless except on things like onions and carrots. In just a few minutes, and with no effort whatsoever, The knife was sharpened up nicely. It did the classic 'slice-though-the-sheet-of-white-paper' action with ease. I recommend this for the average home chef just looking to put that nice edge back on your knives. I am very happy with it and am so glad I didn't waste lots more money getting a more expensive sharpener.

This sharpener has two ceramic rods that do a good job of bringing a knife back to sharp.

The good:
- It allows you to have a consistent angle on both sides of the blade.
- The handle is sturdy and gives you good leverage for running the knife through.
- The ceramic rods seem durable and effective after many sharpenings

The poor:
- The ceramic rods are off-centered so you end up with a burr (the edge folds over slightly so it only feels sharp moving your finger across in one direction). The burr will keep your knife from cutting well.
- It won't sharpen near the knife handle (unless your handle clears the rod holder)
- It is difficult to sharpen the tip since your knife will want to hit the counter at the end of the stroke

Tips:
- You want to try to remove the burr so your knife will cut well. To do this you have to run the blade both ways through the sharpener. I find it easiest to do both pull strokes and push strokes. Alternately you could turn the sharpener around to change the orientation of the rods but I find this awkward, especially since you need to keep alternating sides.
- Start with heavier strokes pushing and pulling the knife through to sharpen both sides. Once you can feel the burr along the entire edge, use gentler strokes (again alternating) until you the knife feels sharp from both sides.

Save your money. This was a horrible purchase. The stones do not rotate, so after a few sharpening, grooves develop, which inevitably result in dulling your knives, rather than sharpening. I recommend purchasing the sharpening blocks that have circular steel or ceramic discs on either side of the blade... These are what professional chefs use, and through personal use, I can attest to their effectiveness.

Had this sharpener for quite a while thinking it was doing a pretty good job. Then my husband sharpened my knives the old way with a hone. What a difference! Used one knife until I felt it was dull, tried this sharpener again and it actually made it worse! It went right into the trash. The name Farberware isn't what it used to be. Don't waste your money.

Style Name: 8-inch Chef's Knife with Sheath Verified Purchase
I like to cook and at home we have Shun stainless steel, Sabatier carbon steel and Forschner/Victorinox stainless steel knives in the kitchen. I bought the Farberware 8" Chef's Knife and 3 1/2" Paring Knife to throw in my checked bags when I travel. I like to cook or eat in for breakfast and frequently dinner. I don't want to take my knife roll with Sabatier knives with me so after reading several reviews I ordered these. One thing I really liked was that they come with a plastic sheath / blade protector so I didn't have to buy those separately. The other thing I liked was the price of less than $20 for two forged kitchen knives.

The knives are surprisingly attractive and well balanced with a nice heft and well fitted handles, rivets, and bolster. The blades show grind marks but that doesn't affect the functionality or the overall appearance. At this price I didn't really expect the company to polish the blades to a mirror finish. They were pretty sharp when they arrived but a few minutes on a water stone got them very sharp. I use the Paring Knife more than the Chef's Knife and it has held an edge pretty well on this trip with daily use. I don't have a steel with me so I can't re-align the edge after each use to keep it as sharp as I would at home.

I would highly recommend these knives for anyone looking for a basic set of decent quality kitchen knives but doesn't want to take out a second mortgage to get them. I also like the Forschner/Victorinox line of kitchen knives with the Fibrox handles for an inexpensive alternative to Shun, Wusthof, etc. They are stamped and are lighter but very good quality.
