5.0 out of 5 stars Great deal
I bought this set based on CR's review fo them as a "Best buy." For comparison I also bought one of the Wusthof Grand Prix knives, which were rated the best overall. I would say that the Wusthof is a slightly better knife, but I fully agree with CR that the price difference is not worth paying. The Farberware set is very good and cuts really well. It stays...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but more work to maintain.
These knives are good. Not the greatest, but good. I've been using them for a couple weeks now and they're fine for what I need. I have two complaints, though.

1. I have found that I need to hand wash and towel dry them IMMEDIATELY after using them. This is somewhat of a pain in the you-know-what. Why do I need to wash and dry them? See #2.

It stays sharp and does everything you might ask a knife set to do. After pondering the issue a while, I have decided I would be foolish to spend the extra money for the higher end knives. This set is really a great deal -- you get a very good set of knives at a very reasonable price.

See #2.

2. A couple of my steak knives developed small rust spots on them after I left them in my sink overnight. A couple other reviewers mentioned this and I just assumed that it magically wouldn't happen to me. In the end, I was able to scour them off, but it makes me worry. My mother says this has to do with the quality of the steel, but they're forged (not pressed), so I thought this wouldn't be a problem.

Other than that, they WERE sharp right out of the box. And, if for some reason yours aren't, it COMES with a sharpener, so you don't have to go out and spend all kinds of money on some fancy blade sharpener.

I really enjoy all the knives/tools that this set comes with. Yeah, it's a pain to wash and dry the knives right after using them, but it means I'm taking better care of them. Hopefully, this means they'll last and really, really long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just fine for the everyday person, November 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
We purchased this set about 1 month back and have found it to be very nice and does what we need it for. We are not chefs, just everyday people with everyday kitchen needs. We use the full set and found each knife to be very sharp, feels good in the hands, and is able to cut very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying!, November 17, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
What you see in the picture and what they describe is not what you get in the box. I sent Amazon an e-mail about this many months ago and recieved only a vague response. It says a few times on the product page that these are FORGED knives leading you to believe that every knife in the set is forged. It grieves my heart to tell you that the six steak knives are cheap, ugly, stinking stamped steel. I consider their quality to be drastically inadequate. The scissors aren't much more impressive than the crappy steak knives. Also included in the set is a rather large meat cleaver which is not mentioned in the ad. This is not a complaint but how did it get in there?
The remaining blades are not bad. They cover almost every cutting, slicing, or chopping job I have come up against and they have held up rather well. If you are not the type of person to base your sense of self worth on the quality of your steak knives and you don't need a reliable pair of scissors than this set is worth considering for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Single Male Kitchen NOOB, May 9, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I just bought this set based on conversations with family, friends, sales personnel, and other's reviews. All say Farberware is a quality company with good customer service and quality products. One thing I have noticed about these knives is they require more maintenance than a lesser quality knife.
For those thinking of getting this product, please do your research prior to purchase. Here are some things you should keep in mind when buying kitchen equipment.
1) Blade material: High carbon steel will keep its sharpness, but requires HAND WASHING (no dishwasher for the lazy)
2) Blade design: Things to look for are forged blades, full tang (the blade is actually inside the entire handle) and a bolster (a section of the knife in-between the handle and the actual cutting surface designed to protect the user from injury)
3) Comfort: does the knife fit your hand. Folks with smaller hands may desire a smaller chef's knife 6" vs. 8")
Please remember this products says right on the box HAND WASH
Keeping that in mind, this is a great product for it's price and you will enjoy years of use with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than your money's worth!, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I just received this set and used them immediately. The knives are lightweight and comfortable - extremely sharp! Although made in China, which I try to avoid, there is quality here. Farberware products are exceptional values, and this knife set is proof you need not spend alot for quality and value. With proper care (hand washing + drying) and an occasional stroke of the steel, I am sure that I will use these knives for many years to come. I recommend these knives, as well as most any Farberware product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this set!!, April 24, 2004

This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
We bought this set about a month ago and we have been really happy with it since the day we got it. I was looking for a nice set and was willing to spend the extra money on nice knives, but when I came upon the reviews of this set and how everyone loved them, I decided to give them a try. The handles are nice and easy to grip. They are somewhat heavy, but I like that to guide me in cutting. You won't be disappointed with this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but rusts, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Farberware Pro Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
We love our knives. The only reason I didn't give them 5/5 is that you have to hand-wash them as they tend to develop rust spots in the dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Farberware Pro knife review, December 12, 2008

The set is awsome. After 30 years of cheap knives that the handle either falls off or bends it's wonder to finally have a good set of knives. Having a pair is scissors in the kitten is a plus. I don't mind washing them by hand. I've gotten into the habit of washing them and putting them away right after I used them.

No need to purchase an expensive set of chefs knives when these pro forged are just as good.I've been handling knives all my life, and can sharpen to a razors edge, this is a fine set of knives for the money.Dont under estimate these knives because they are very sharp. And also i've read they rust in spots, mine never rust but i know knives and take good care of them.My opinion you can't go wrong with this set of knives.
