1.0 out of 5 stars A Lost Art, September 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Farberware Millennium Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
It seems as though crafting a good knife at a fair price is a lost art. While these knives are forged as advertised (with the exception of the steak knives), I doubt that they are truly made of stainless steel. On the box it indicates that the knives are dishwasher safe, but after the first wash they have rusted. I am sorely disappointed, as I had expected more from Farberware.

1.0 out of 5 stars These things are junk, December 7, 2002
This review is from: Farberware Millennium Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I bought my wife a set of these last year for Christmas.... They won't cut carrots, potatoes, or anything fibrous. I have spent almost a year and at least [money] to try to sharpen them, and after buying the ... chef's choice 3 stage sharpener (excellent machine, by the way)they are now marginal. The problem is the thickness of the blade at the cutting edge. It does not taper to a fine point, but has a huge bevel which will not allow the knives to cut through firm foods. After I buy a good set of somehthing else, I am going to take these to my bench grinder and do some serious reshaping. I think I have become obsessed with these stupid knives!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for the money, October 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Farberware Millennium Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
There are better certainly knives available but, for the price, this set is more than adequate. The knives were not very sharp out of the box but that was cured by a few minutes with a stone. The blades seem to hold their edges well and that is an important consideration for me.

The sharpening steel is more coarse than I prefer but my old steel fits the knife block so it's not a problem.

These knives will rust if they are not dried after washing.

If you can afford to spend more, you'll probably be happier with a better set than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Not As Good As Farberware Pro Forged, Beware!, October 10, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Millennium Forged 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I'm a professional man, horse ranch for fun, and extending the family tradition of men who cook and well. I'm not an expert chef, but know quality and value. I own all Calphalon and Analon Professional cookware, etc.

I had purchased 3 sets of these AFTER CALLING Farberware and asking what their best set was, here's what I wrote re the return to Amazon ...

I'd like to clarify exactly why I am returning these. Prior to purchasing these I'd gotten a couple of Farberware knives at Walmart that I thought quite good. I called Farberware and spoke with their customer service and told them I wanted to order their best, explained which I had, etc., and they told me this set. Well, after receiving them and calling them back I found out the person I spoke with was wrong. I explained the situation to a supervisor, and said that since I'd called them and their advisor had given me bad information that I thought it was unfair to both Amazon and to myself that I'd have to return these to Amazon, and asked them to handle the replacement ... since it was their product and their advisor who gave wrong info. The supervisor said she'd only do one set, which made no sense, but I thought I'd try even that. Well, to date, I've yet to receive them, so in all I'm very unhappy with Farberware.
The better knives are these:

Farberware Pro Forged

These are:

Farberware Millennium (which aren't as heavy, the blades aren't as nice, and the handles are cheap by comparison to the Pro Forged).

End of excerpt from my letter to Amazon.

At this point I'm hoping Amazon will get me the right ones, Farberware customer service certainly wasn't, even though their customer service rep gave me the wrong information.

PLEASE NOTE ... I'd bought some Calphalon Contemporary cutlery, which is really great stuff (I'd take one of those to a whole set of most cutlery, especially any under say $100). Then I tried some Farberware Pro Forged, they are solid, nice blades, great handles, and seemed to me a quality item for a very good price (and over $100 less than the Calphalon ... which are good, but $100 is $100). So I'd recommend the Farberware Pro Forged as a great value, the Calphalon Contemporary if you want even better and don't mind the price. But if you compare the Farberware Millennium is no comparison, the knives aren't as nice and the handles are some kind of cheap molded thing vs. nice solid precision handles that are solidly riveted on.
