Nice knives but ...be careful,
This review is from: Farberware Pro Stainless-Steel 15-Piece Fine-Edge Knife Set with Block, Black (Kitchen)
Had the knives two weeks, and was really impressed by the look feel and cut. However, after a couple of washes, rust spots began appearing. I suppose if I washed them all by hand and dried them off right away instead of air drying this wouldn't have happened(my fault..(?) ). I expected better, since I've had cheap K-mart knives for 10 years that didn't rust. I contacted farberware and they did say that if I return the rusted knives they would exchange them, with a turn around time of 6-8 weeks.

High Carbon,

These Farberware pro knives use 18/8 AKA A2 tool steel. They are not stainless, and should probably not be labeled as such. A2 is stain resistant, though. The reason they rust is because they have a higher carbon content and lower chromium than many other stainless knives, with added Vanadiaum for better edge retention. This allows them to keep an edge longer, and makes them easier to sharpen. The price you pay is they will rust if you leave them in a hot dishwasher several times. If you want knives you do not need to look after, you may wish to go elsewhere. If you want knives that perform far above the asking price, then you should consider these near the top.

Don't Get this Knife Set,

This review is from: Farberware Pro Stainless-Steel 15-Piece Fine-Edge Knife Set with Block, Black (Kitchen)
I am suprised that so many people are having the same issue on this knife set as I do. Don't get it. They might look cool and pretty, the uni-body design, but they rust like crazy. They are suppose to be stainless steel, but started rust after washed for the very first time. I tried to contact Farberware, and they never reply me back. I gave up, and now this knife set just sits on my kitchen counter and collecting dusts.

Get ready to rust...,

These knives may look pretty out of the box but after one wash, every single piece had some sort of rust spot! They also don't keep an edge very well -- I would suggest saving your money until you can afford a quality set of knives, you would be truly throwing it away by picking up this inferior product!

Nice looking knives.,

I have owned this set of knives for a year now. I really like the way they look, the wood block that comes with it is fine with no defects (i have the black version). The knives cut well and they are strong. Overall for the average home cooking this is a good set that perform as well as they look.

Rust is a user error,
This review is from: Farberware Pro Stainless-Steel 15-Piece Fine-Edge Knife Set with Block, Black (Kitchen)
I received this set as a gift about 5 years ago and they have served me well through heavy use. I have been pleased with both the quality and solid design. This rust that everyone is complaining about is a surprise to me, but I never put any of my stainless kitchenware in the dishwasher. Don't listen to these people, they probably also leave bad reviews for non-stick cookware after they use metal utensils on them. Here's the truth: if you don't take care of stuff, it doesn't perform/last. If you treat them like professional knives, they will perform that way. Hand wash, use the honing steel before each use, and sharpen 1-2 times per year, depending on use (I understand professional sharpening is fairly inexpensive), and you will love them. Especially since the entire set is less than the cost of one piece of Wusthof!

I recieved this as a wedding gift and I really like it. The knives are good quality and are sharp. They will stay nice as long as you take care of them. The steak knives work really well. I would recommend buying this product if you are on a somewhat limited budget but still want a good quality product.

Great-Looking Knives that Perform Well,

This review is from: Farberware Pro Stainless-Steel 15-Piece Fine-Edge Knife Set with Block, Black (Kitchen)
I have had this set for over 3 years now. Cutting with these knives is a joy, and after using mine, several of my friends want their own set, too! The knives are comfortable in the hand, well-balanced, and stay sharp a good long time if steeled correctly. A good steel (it is not a sharpener) is supplied with the set. As with any quality knives, you will need to get them professionally sharpened every once in a while depending on use. For me, this is about once a year.
Do NOT put these knives (or any other stainless steel knives) in the dishwasher. Stainless steel won't rust due to humidity in the atmosphere, and won't corrode if used on acidic food like tomatoes or pineapples. BUT given time acidic food residue or even acidic water can cause stainless steel to discolor or rust. SO you have to wash your knives right after you use them, then dry them immediately before putting them back in their knife block! Take good care of these knives, they are a good value and will serve you well for years if you do.

A variety of knives for your everyday kitchen use. Although it says dishwasher safe, a few have already had a bit of rusty spots on them.

These are not the sharpest knives I own but they are close to it. People that think rust is the fault of the knife need to learn to read the instructions that come with these knives. It plainly warns against leaving these knives around wet because they will rust if you do. If you don't take proper care of things they won't work like they should. Yes these knives are stainless. There are different types of stainless knives. These are high carbon knives because you can put a sharper edge on high carbon knives if you know what you're doing. Many stainless knives can't be sharpened at all without totally ruining them. If you don't know what makes a good knife maybe you should learn before you insult good knives calling them junk. These knives are far from being junk.
I can put an edge on these knives in about 10 seconds that will last for months. Then if you use the right knife for the job you're doing you will get excellent results. There's a reason they make paring knives and steak knives differently. These are among the best kitchen knives I've ever owned. I do own some knives that are sharper but they are not kitchen knives. These knives are excellent for the price. They aren't pro level knives but you aren't paying for pro level knives. |
