5.0 out of 5 stars Very good economical set
This set was a replacement for my first knife set that my wife and I bought when we got married. The knives are very good quality and fit all of the reccomendations of the pros. They are also quite a bit cheaper than most other brands and you get more knives with this set. They do not dull easily and mine have not rusted even after repeated washings.

These were admittedly a great deal. You can buy only a few knives for the price of this set. But the moment you get them you understand why. First and foremost is the monster lie being propagated here: These are not Farberware knives N-O-T. They are made in China by the Hoan Corporation. I wrote Farberware about this. The knives do not indicate on them or anywhere on any packing that they are Farberware. What does this mean? It means that Amazon is putting that Farberware label on them to move the product. I find that so offensive it's enough to make me want to skip Amazon as a source for online products. The key to any purchase is trust and they've lost mine. So, how are the knives. They are what you would expect. They are full tang and a bit heavy with plastic handles. The block is a piece of pine crap that'll likely split in a few weeks on the countertop. Mine are going back post haste with an angry note about being lied to and deceived by Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rusty and Dull, December 26, 2004
By
This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
Whatever you do, DO NOT purchase this *cutlery* set. The knives are dull out of the box and even after sharpening. The biggest issue is they rusted and stained about a month after we had them. We attempted to contact the manufacturer via email 3 times. We finally received an email and we told that their 'warranty only covers defects in material and workmanship under normal care and use'. Do not purchase this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Quality & Performance, December 26, 2002

This cutlery was a terrible dissapointment.
Right out of the box the knifes were not particularly sharp and would not cut anything well.
Even the serrated bread knife would not easily cut bread.
My recommendation is to definitely pass on this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok knives: use 'em and abuse 'em, November 14, 2005

This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
First off, these ARE NOT Farberware. I'm not sure why Amazon STILL lists them as that. The knives are quite dull; I was hoping I would be able to quickly chop with the chefs knife, like I see them do on TV, but the knife was way too dull and HEAVY! The sharpening steel is nice, but it doesn't sharpen them THAT much. I do like the variety of knives but haven't used half of them and have to admit I don't even know what half of them are for. That being said, I like the fact that I can use and abuse the knifes, as I got them for a great price on Amazon ($19.99.)

Next time, I'll purchase a better quality, small set (don't need 21 knives!) but this works for me now. I am in college and didn't want a knife set I have to babysit, so this fits the bill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good knives, good price, October 3, 2005
This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I bought this same set from Hecht's for about $35 (40% off). This sale is a good deal for a set of decent-quality Farberware knives. Unless you use them all day every day, like a professional chef, these are more than good enough quality.

I have had this set for a few months now and am very happy with it. The blades aren't serrated, so they can be sharpened when they start to get dull. There is a wide variety of blade sizes, so worrying that you will never have the right knife for the job is out of the question.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Knives for you money!, October 15, 2002
By
This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I bought this set as a gift and it it great! The block holds the knives very well [the slots are the exact size for the appropriate knives], and the knives themselves are heavyweight and work very well. I especially like the fact that the blade is riveted to the handle, so you know it is not going to fall apart or become loose while you are using them.

The only thing I would not recommend with this knife set is to put them in your dishwasher. A few of the knives were put in the washer and the handles came out looking at little dull, so I would say that a good handwashing would do the trick.

Overall I feel the quality is great. I do not see why someone would want to spend [more] for other sets -- these will definitely get the job done and do it well!

2.0 out of 5 stars Tricked, March 4, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I purchased this knife set in early September in anticipation of my new kitchen. Unfortunately, the kitchen was delayed and I opened the knives only today, 6 months later. As I was unsheathing each knife, I noticed how cheap they appeared and I wondered who the manufacturer was. The box said "Tristar," but I didn't remember that name from 6 months ago... So, I went back to the page on Amazon and see that I was tricked like a few other people. Like someone else has said, NOWHERE on the box is the name "Farberware." The knives and scissors seem to be of low quality, complete with bits of plastic hanging from the seams. I am even missing one of the 8 steak knives. I paid $40 for this set, I think and I cannot imagine paying the list price of $100. I have not used them yet, but I think I will just give them away and buy a better set at a local shop. It's too late to return them and I am very dissapointed.
Also, I have learned a lesson-when you buy something from any place in anticipation of some event, don't wait until that event before you open the item! Open it immediately and check it out right then and there so that the item can be returned if necessary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Everyday Set, December 17, 2005
By
Dan (Irvine, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Farberware Tristar 21-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I bought these knives for $19.99 and for that price, they are worth it. These are a decent everyday set - you can use them without worrying about ruining the blade and can save your good knives for dinner parties or when you're preparing bigger meals. I leave these on my countertop for friends and family who use my kitchen as well so they don't touch my Wusthof and Henckels knives.

The knives are very thick and are poorly sharpened; they only sharpened the very tip of the blade to a point (basically looks like the roof on a house). I spent about a full day re-shaping/sharpening all the blades into a gradual 'V' so the edges will hold longer and now they cut well. The sheer thickness of the blade makes it a little difficult to cut without a gradually sharpened edge. The knives are pretty heavy and the plastic handles give it a lower quality feel.

I was concerned about some people saying the knives rust very quickly but I haven't had any problems with rusting - I never leave them soaking and dry them off as soon as I wash them.
