A Forgotten Time in Japanese History,
By
This review is from: Farewell to Manzanar (Mass Market Paperback)
I feel privileged that I was able to find out more about a time in U.S. and Japanese history that most people of today's generation have long forgotten. The content and overall storyline of the book was a bit confusing and hard to follow because it skipped around and didn't follow a sequential timeline. However, I could really feel the strong emotions prominent throughout the lives of our main protagonist Japanese family, the Wakatsuki's. It was as if the powerful feelings of misery, resignation, and fear emanating from the members of this forcibly detained family suddenly become tangible and very much real to us. These emotional bursts come in spurts, though. Much of the time all you read is mundane exposition, which is necessary, but it just doesn't tug on the heartstrings and pique your interest. Overall, it is a good book: an expertly written and moving memoir.

This was one of the first books that was required reading that I actually enjoyed. This was required reading for my English class. I loved it. I was always 7-8 chapters ahead of the class and finished the whole book about two weeks before the rest of the class..it was just that good. It's captivating and sometimes heart wrenching. A must read for everyone.

this book is nothing too cerebral, but it's a nice narrative of someone's life before during and after a black time in american history. sad, but true.
