Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Tonkin's latest installment in the Richard Mariner seafaring series would make a perfect big-screen blockbuster. It boasts high-octane action; strong male characters and a tough, smart, attractive woman; pulse-pounding suspense; and disaster after unimaginable disaster--all leading up to an ultimately satisfying ending. The plot opens with Captain Richard Mariner and his wife, Robin, on board their tugboat, Sisyphus, when a huge rogue wave hits. The boat survives due to Richard's quick thinking and savvy seamanship, but Robin is washed overboard. Frantic to find her, Richard realizes he also has a duty to the ships ahead of him, which have suffered much worse fates, particularly a submarine that is likely to sink unless Mariner and his crew find a way to save it. What they don't know is that there's a murderer on board the sub who's intent on escaping. Tonkin writes with a sure hand and swashbuckling assurance. Although the "gentle read" crowd may find the testosterone level dangerously high here, adventure and suspense fans will feel right at home. Emily Melton
