Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is right up my alley. Not only does the subject matter interest me, but it's a visual treat." (P. Allen Smith)

"The book is entertaining and colorful -- and deceptively full of facts." (Journal Sentinel)

"The book she wrote was her way of teaching herself about farming. The result is a kind of Country Life 101 textbook, graced with warmth and good humor." (Dallas Morning News)

"It's a glorious celebration of life in the country, one that I can enjoy not only by myself but also with my kids." (Dooce)

"...this book is amazing for child or adult, young farmer or the "farmer wannabe." I loved it just for the nostalgic trip down memory lane." (Press Republican

"Utterly charming and thoroughly researched, Farm Anatomy is one of those rare treats that speak to your eyes and your heart, and in the process manage to expand your mind." (The Atlantic)

Farm Anatomy fits perfectly into my growing collection of books that will come in handy when I give up city life for green acres. (Or more realistically, when I’m sitting in my city apartment needing a quick armchair-style escape.)

“Charming drawings and handwritten text make this the perfect picture book for grown-up dreamers.”

It has adorable illustrations, and it is very informative.

I was raised on a farm myself, and this book both brought back memories, good and bad, as well as taught me things I didn't know or remember.

I saw this book reviewed on a blog and instantly fell in love with the "comb styles" page featured. So I wanted to take a better look at the book to see if it was something that could be gifted this coming holiday season and was not disappointed. The illustrations were well done and the whole book was full of color. The biggest surprise was how my autistic 5-year-old son LOVED it! We laid in bed for an hour talking about the different parts of a farm, the plants and the animals. We did some counting, explored how a plant has roots and where chicken nuggets come from. I don't have coffee table books but this might make its way there to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Richly illustrated, this book is easy, quick and fun to read yet packed with information that will help any townie enjoy a visit to the countryside. Want to know how to can tomatoes or bake bread? This book tells you. Want to know how to tell if a storm is coming by looking at the clouds overhead? This book tells you. Want to be able to identify common breeds of livestock as you zip along a country highway? This book tells you that too. Best of all, the book shows the extraordinary range of knowledge and skill that our farming ancestors applied in their everyday lives. Anyone who remembers a visit to their grandparents' farm will enjoy the memories brought back by Farm Anatomy.

I came across this book on some blog recently and wanted to purchase it. Our family is about to move onto a farm and I thought it would be a good book to help us learn about all the things we don't know yet. The illustrations and short but detailed descriptions are wonderful. My 10 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter have enjoyed this as much as me. Even my husband likes it. It's quickly become a resource book in our home. A favorite and one I know will be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a sweet little book that is a great reference for anybody interested in farmlife. There is no story here, just farm-connected information that some will find obvious, others esoteric -- candle making, parts of a pig, root cellaring, which chickens are 'egg' or 'meat' chickens, etc. Lots of fun stuff - if you are interested in farmlife. There are some neat recipes, too. For a NYC girl married to an authentic, knowledgable farm guy, Julia Rothman has done her homework, offering us exposure in a cursory way that is informative and full of charming illustrations.

I was given this book as a Christmas gift and it soon made it's way around my office. (My job is agriculture.) It was a huge hit with everyone! While there are a few inaccuracies that only an agriculture obsessed person would catch, it is still by far the best book of its kind! This book is on my gift list for sure! So worth the money! Buy it now!
