5.0 out of 5 stars Great Video about the Farm

2.0 out of 5 stars leaves a lot of questions
My three-year old loves these kind of dvds. This one has very little explanation of things. For example, you watch a factory making potato chips. It doesn't tell you why they shake the potatoes before frying them (to get the dirt off??) or why they shake them after they fry them (to get the grease off??) or why they are spraying them (to put flavoring / salt on??)...

5.0 out of 5 stars great educational and entertaining video for toddlers+, February 27, 2008

This was my sons favorite video. I didn't allow him to watch anything until after he was two, and I only wanted it to be educational. This video hit the mark. It's an overview of farming - "where does our food come from?". It's perfect on run-time. In total I think it's under 45 minutes. Rusty is the host, and he gives a simple, easily understood overview of tractors and farming. There's lots of shots of tractors, cows, all sorts of farm equipment, as well as factory equipment used to make peanut butter, bread, and so on. After nearly 2 years, my son still asks to watch this video on occaison. It's especially great for parents in that there are no whiny, annoying voices or singing, and it has great educational value, as well as pushing healthy food! I couldn't ask for anything more.

I ordered this DVD for my 2 yr. old son. He really enjoys the machinery as well as learning about where milk, peanut butter, potato chips, and bread come from. This is really entertaining and I don't mind watching as well.

This is an outstandingly well produced video aimed at kids, but interesting to parents too.

Starting with a girl making a lunch time sandwich with her Mom, (The Levine family at home) she asks herself: I wonder where our food comes from.

And the video host, Rusty DeWees shows us how every food in his lunch bucket is made on the farm. First, plowing the fields, then sowing the corn, then cultivating, then harvesting, then preparing to feed the cows, then feeding the cows, then milking the cows, then cleaning up the cow poop, and puting it back on the fields. No other video presentation I've seen does this all so well, and with such great video production quality.

But that's just the milk! What about the rest of the PB&J sandwich? The video shows how wheat is harvested (great aerial and in-cab shots of John Deere combine harvesters!) and then milled into flour, and then backed into bread.

And then the peanut butter. From harvesting the peanuts, to roasting them and grinding them into peanut butter, it's all covered.
And then the apple jelly is made starting with apple harvesting by hand in New England.

If this were just about tractors and farm equipment in action, it would be a lot of fun. But this DVD is a collection of documentaries for children with top shelf content and music.

I had to buy a replacement because the first one got broken due to mishandling, but it's worth replacing so that we have this video in our library.

I'd give it six stars for education, if I could.

That is just one example, but there are questions hanging all through the dvd. If you have an inquisitive toddler like me or you want what your kids watch to have educational value, this dvd is probably not for you. I am not a farmer so I did not know how to answer a lot of the questions. My mom and husband work on a farm and they did not the reasons for why some of the stuff was done in this video. They would love to know the answers to some of my toddlers questions about the dvd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Farm Country Ahead, April 26, 2011

My family loves this video. My boys are now 12 and 14 and they still love watching it. When they were small, we had this on tape. We eventually wore it out to the point where it wouldn't play anymore. It has been 3 or 4 years since we've seen it. The difference now is that my sons are driving the vehicles that they were marveled by. When we found it on dvd, I ordered it right a way. Now the boys can share it with their little sister. Excellent representation of agricultural.

I can't count how many times I've seen this "tractor video" in the past 4 months since my 2 year old received it for his birthday. It features a man talking about how all of the different things in his lunchbox are made/grown, and then shows footage of actual planting/harvesting/milking/baking, etc set to music. The video features great information, and isn't annoying for parents to watch/hear over and over again. I highly recommend this video

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding..and Rusty is a great host!, December 7, 2010
This review is from: Farm Country Ahead (DVD)
We bought this video for my 20 month old son because he sees tractors every day on the farms around us. I think I enjoyed it as much as him ...but he LOVES it. It never slows down long enough for him to lose interest, and each segment is just long enough that he is not bored with it. He especially likes to see the cows. Very well done. And Rusty is ...well he's just Rusty! Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cow Poop, September 11, 2010

My 2 year old loves this video. It is a lifesaver somedays. The only downside is Rusty in the video talks about cow poop so now my 2 year old runs around saying cow poop. It is a good video as far as educating what farmers do and what the equipment is.

My son is really into truck videos of all kinds. This video is his favorite, and mine too. It is well written and produced, and Rusty is a great host, kid friendly without being patronizing. There is a sense of humor in these videos that is lacking in other series. So many of the other videos that try to incorporate kids in the video sound scripted and seem awkward. I also like that this video makes some effort to show all aspects of farming, including the dirty side of it. The music is generic studio rock, but I find it to be well produced as well.
