DogWorld, Novmber 2007
“If you grew up on a farm or live on one now, you’ll love this book. But even the most urban dog lover can delight in reading about the importance and heroics of these true working dogs.”
The Bookwatch, August 2007
“A fine leisure read especially recommended for any rural public lending library.”
From guardians to shepherds to boon companions, pedigreed purebreds or loveable mutt, they are the farm dogs at work, play, and at home, and this book is about them. From the Australian shepherd rounding up the cattle to the German shepherd holding the coyote at bay and from the border collie in the field to the mutt at your feet: these are farm dogs at work and play, members of the family no matter how far afield, always at home on the living, working land.

Farm Dogs - a disappointment,
This review is from: Farm Dogs: A Celebration of the Farm's Hardest Worker (Hardcover)
This is a very attractive book with very little substance and a great deal of inaccurate information. I was very disappointed - I had bought it as a gift for someone just getting into working stockdogs, and I thought it would be a nice introduction to farm dogs on a fairly superficial level.Unfortunately, the book is very sloppily put together and not only do the descriptions in many cases not match the photographs they are intended for, but the information is often inaccurate. The book has some bewildering inconsistencies - for example, the description of the McNab (a smooth coated cousin of the border collie) is accompanied by a picture of what looks like a yellow lab puppy and a corgi!. A description of a Bernese mountain dog accompanies a picture of an anonymous large breed dog that is not identified at all. If you are looking for a coffee table book of pretty pictures, then go ahead and indulge in this book, but it is not for anyone seriously interested in working farm dogs. I can accept the fact that this is not a book for the serious working dog enthusiast, but the many inaccuracies and bad editing are unforgivable.

FARM DOGS: A CELEBRATION OF THE FARM'S HARDEST WORKER celebrates all kinds of farm dogs, from sheep herding breeds and shepherds to farm companions. Color photos throughout accompany text which considers dog training, roles in farm work, and memoirs of notable farm dogs. A fine leisure read especially recommended for any rural public lending library.
