"Honest recipes, food serve-straight. I only wish there were a thousand of them, not a hundred..." --Mirka M.G. Breen, author, The Voice of Thunder

About the Author

Born and raised in central Illinois, the daughter of a Methodist minister from Indiana and a school teacher from Nebraska farm country, Karen Jones Gowen has down-to-earth Midwestern roots. Karen and her husband Bruce have lived in Utah, Illinois, California and Washington, currently residing near Salt Lake City. They are the parents of ten children. Not surprisingly, family relationships are a recurring theme in Gowen's writing. Farm Girl Country Cooking: Hearty Meals for the Active Family is her fifth book.

The recipes are so family friendly, and I love having them on my Kindle.

My copy is missing the pictures of the recipes that are mentioned in the book, but most of the recipes look easy to make and tasty to eat.

Boy did Karen Jones Gowen bring back memories with her latest, Farm Girl Country Cooking: Hearty Meals for the Active Family! Many a day I turned out two entire sheet pans of biscuits and mixed pancakes in a 4 quart bowl. A houseful of teens can eat you out of house & home in the blink of an eye and they are always hungry.

Looking at Karen's picture, she and I are about of an age. Crockpots were all the rage when we were first learning to cook in the late 60s and early 70's. Julia Child had made them popular as a way to cook beans and even Farm Journal put out recipes using the Crockpot. That was when I first learned to cook Mexican food, something I learned from another military wife - a California farm girl - when I was in Germany. I started turning out a stir fry now and then too, so I was delighted to see that Karen included some of those recipes. For those who feel Mexican, stir fry and a crock pot doesn't qualify as "farm food", do let me point out that this book is named after Karen's first book, Farm Girl - a compilation of stories told by her 90 year old mother about growing up on a farm in the 1920s. These are the recipes that Karen used to feed her large family, not the food that her Farm Girl mother ate growing up on the farm.

Now, if you have a small family, maybe just a child or two at home or even none at all, then this is not the cookbook for you. The recipes are all much too large. You would be eating the same one thing for a week! (Great if you want to fill your freezer though.

I enjoy recipe books that don't call for odd or hard to find ingredients. The fact that I can make most of the recipes from items I have on hand in our kitchen is an absolute plus.

Good all around cooking. Simple ingredients, easy to follow recipes. It appears that the recipes can be doubled, or used just as is.

I liked the easy to follow directions and the authors clear purpose to provide hearty family meals. However, saying that she strives for healthy recipes is a bit of a stretch. They are not bad, but I would not set this aside as a healthy recipes cookbook.

Finally, a cookbook that isn't all about eating healthy. The recipes are for large amounts, but will be perfect for me to use as Potluck recipes or even freezer meals. I haven't tried any of the recipes, but have delighted in reading them.
