5.0 out of 5 stars Bird Bath Heater
This 150 watt bird bath heater is perfect if you want winter birds to visit your yard. It keeps a large bird bath completely open in the harshest weather.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big Ol' De-icer
I was hoping this de-icer would be a bit smaller. Here's why:

Typical bird baths should be fairly shallow or the birds will not bathe but simply drink from them. I realize it's rare that a bird will bathe in the winter, but it does happen.

The problems I have with this device are the size and the temperature.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big Ol' De-icer, December 13, 2008

This review is from: Farm Innovators C-50 Premium Cast Aluminum Birdbath De-Icer, 150-Watt (Lawn & Patio)

I have a pond de-icer that keeps the water at exactly 34 degrees, this device I believe is much warmer and causes a lot of evaporation. As well, the cord should really be much longer to keep the connection further away from the water. The size is a little large and I think it could be easily engineered to be smaller. Because of the size, it barely gets below the surface of the water in my bird bath and I would imagine the same would happen in most shallow bird baths.

I don't mind maintaining the level of the water daily but if I have to leave for a few days, the water totally evaporates from the bird bath due to it being too warm. That's a problem. Also, there's not an auto-shut-off feature with this device if the water level dips below the norm. I think for the same cost, a more efficient and smaller device could be designed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not working, December 27, 2008

This review is from: Farm Innovators C-50 Premium Cast Aluminum Birdbath De-Icer, 150-Watt (Lawn & Patio)
The first one we tried the thermostat did not work and just heated the water up to over 100 degrees. We went back and got another which did the same thing. Poor quality control. We cannot recommend this brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Birdbath de-icer, January 6, 2008

We live in NE Ohio, we feed the wild birds. The birdbath de-icer is wonderful, it keeps the water in the birdbath from freezing. Nobody likes to go outside when it is freezing cold and chip ice from birdbaths. With a de-icer all you have to do is add fresh water once in awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps on tickin", January 28, 2011
This review is from: Farm Innovators C-50 Premium Cast Aluminum Birdbath De-Icer, 150-Watt (Lawn & Patio)
I have a large acrylic birdbath. It is 36" wide and 8" deep. I live in CT. the home of Amageddon winter. I have a small pump in the birdbath to create a little running spout. This heater has done a heroic job keeping the water warm enough not to freeze over completely. We have had a month of 20 degree days and below 0 nights. We have recently had 18" of snow in one day. Has not phased this heater. I have used the same one for 3 years and it's still going strong. Because the birdbath is so large sometimes ice does form on the far side and edges. But for at least 18" around the heater and the pump, the water has NEVER frozen!

I have just bought another one to keep as a back up. GREAT product!

2.0 out of 5 stars Calcification issues, January 28, 2010
This review is from: Farm Innovators C-50 Premium Cast Aluminum Birdbath De-Icer, 150-Watt (Lawn & Patio)
It does keep the water from turning to ice, but it also tends to develop calcium deposits all over it. I tried to buy a decalcifier product and it took some of it off, but then after soaking in the bird bath for another day, the calcium deposits returned. Don't know how healthy this is for the birds, and is not very attractive with white bumps all over it.

I have used this heater for many years, with consistent results. The birds can count on a drink even in cold weather, and when natural sources freeze over, as they did recently, they flock to this consistent water supply. My bird bath is deep enough to keep it covered completely, which makes it work most effectively. This one is a replacement for one that died after many years, and was no longer stocked at my local farm supply store. I was delighted to find it here.

Had this brand in the past & it lasted forever until I dropped it. Bought a new different brand and it never kept the water unfrozen. Come to find out it was only 50 watts ! Went on Amazon and found this brand still a available so I ordered & no more frozen bird bath! 150 watts will do the job for the cold midwest winters. Made to last.

This review is from: Farm Innovators C-50 Premium Cast Aluminum Birdbath De-Icer, 150-Watt (Lawn & Patio)
My old bird bath defroster croaked, I needed a new one. I had the old one for over 12 years. This one works good, comes with a 3 year warranty if this fails to work. Just what I needed.
