4.0 out of 5 stars Just waiting for the birds!
The large size of this birdbath gives plenty of room for many birds at one time. An outdoor extension cord can be added to the short (18") cord if needed but it is nice not to have extra laying around. The gravel texture will allow the birds to perch without slipping but may make the bath harder to clean out. If you have the means, a spray and rinse should be enough. This...

3.0 out of 5 stars Really liked it a lot! But eventually the fake rock stuff came off
I bought this several years ago and like it a lot. The fake grainy stuff keeps birds from slipping and it has a shallow end and a deeper end.
I don't know whether it stays on all the time like the other reviewer mentioned, I never noticed. It did keep ice from forming and only in Jan on truly windy and freezing nights there would be a little rim of ice around...

This bath can easily be unplugged and brought inside to clean, too. The end furthest from the cord is shallower than the other end - great for different size birds to wade in for a bath. I placed a couple of large smooth stones on that end just in case they are needed. I can see steam rising from the surface on cold days. The heater is regulated to come on only when the temperature drops below a certain level. However, the water does evaporate and the birdbath will need to be replenished daily or every other day depending on your environment.

1.0 out of 5 stars not for northern Iowa, but sold here, January 3, 2010
This review is from: Farm Innovators FS-1 Four Seasons Sand Coated Heated Birdbath - Tan, 60-Watt (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this product in Hampton, Iowa for use near Mason City, Iowa. Only when you open up the box does it say "operational use to 0 degrees F", in the instructions. So you would not know that by reading only the outside of the package. So it froze up right away. Really dissapointing! Well below 0 here, more like 20 below. Wish box advertiseing would have been more forthcoming.

I bought this several years ago and like it a lot. The fake grainy stuff keeps birds from slipping and it has a shallow end and a deeper end.
I don't know whether it stays on all the time like the other reviewer mentioned, I never noticed. It did keep ice from forming and only in Jan on truly windy and freezing nights there would be a little rim of ice around the outside. I haven't had the leaking problems either. I wonder, since I bought mine 3 years ago whether quality has gone down since as with so many other things?
My only problem, (I suppose it can't be expected to last forever) is that the grainy fake rock liner separated from the black plastic unit it covers, once a hole in that developed and water could get underneath the whole lining went down hill fairly fast.
I will now be replacing it. Probably with another one since there aren't that many choices out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Birds!, February 6, 2010

I had used a plastic pot saucer as a birdbath for ground level, filled with some small rocks. Once the temperature dropped, my birds would walk around on the ice and look disappointed. I received this bird bath as a gift (thanks, sis!) and immediately replaced the pot saucer with it. Bird & squirrel use was instantaneous. This has been a cold, wet winter in my neck of the woods (Western North Carolina) and this bird bath has kept them very happy. One white-throated sparrow even bathed in it when the temperature was below freezing! Cleaning is accomplished with a stiff bristle brush and a rinse-out. Would definitely purchase again.

Appears to work well. The birds began using it immediately and the squirrels followed shortly after.

The Farm Innovators "Four Seasons" Sand Coated Ground Birdbath is Pretty Good - It Could Be Just a Little More Durable, Though.
It hold one Gallon of water, It keeps the water from freezing and the water is just barely warm, which the birds and squirrels seem to like. The edge of the sand-coated bowl material chipped in a couple of places from outdoor handling, but it works good. That's why I believe it could be a little more durable because it is used outdoors.

This holds quite a bit of water, so it doesn't need constant refilling. We've had some below-zero temps this winter and the water has remained unfrozen. It remains to be seen how long the unit lasts, though -- some reports on heated birdbaths say they only last one season. Won't know about this one until next winter!

I am delighted with this heated bird bath pond, as are the birds! We had 3 days of snow and now temps at 20 degrees since the day I set it up. kind of nice looking out and seeing unfrozen water and birds splashing in it... makes me think spring LOL The unit will look natural come spring in the garden. The electric cord snaps in inderneath so it will be hidden.

Farm Innovators "Four Seasons" Sand Coated Ground Birdbath - Tan; Model FS-1, 60-Watt ....I have had this birth bath for about two weeks. I love this bird bath. I have had no problems with the bird bath. When it's cold out the water will steam and evaporate slowly. It holds one gallon of water. Very easy to dump and rinse out. Light weight and can dump it with one hand. You will enjoy it....
