Although the unit does not get hot, for peace of mind I set mine up on a few concrete patio pavers. It helps in preventing too much dirt and straw from getting under the unit itself.
Perhaps I didn't read the product information carefully, but the box doesn't say it either. The product review does say for outdoor, covered use so it unclear to me which information is correct.
I also have it plugged in through my P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor to make sure it does not draw too much power, and it is barely noticeable. I haven't actually been able to catch it in its "On" mode since the unit is thermostatically controlled, but the proof is in the thawed water.
Tonight's temps should dip down to about 13F, but at least my chickens will have water to drink.

Great device. Keeps my 5-gallon waterer thawed. Warm, not hot to touch.Published 4 days ago by SteenMama
So far so good. Has not frozen up since I plugged it in and the temp has gotten down to below 16 degrees F most nights and down to almost zero on several nights. Read morePublished 10 days ago by Ninjanurse

Hate to prematurely rate these as I have seen them fail but, that said, it is doing its job so far keeping the water in a liquid state to 12 degrees so far.Published 10 days ago by Amazon Customer
I haven't been able to use it yet. It needs a direct connection to an outlet, and I have to wait until spring to run power out to the chicken yard. Read morePublished 11 days ago by L Collett
