We have guinea hens and I was tired of carting their metal water can into the house to defrost it twice a day during the winter. I looked into the one piece water fount/heaters, but thanks to an Amazon.com review, I rejected them. The reviewers said they were complicated to refill. I went with this heater that you set the fount on top of. I was worried at first about the label which warned the top got hot. Would it burn the guineas or ignite the straw? Actually the top is barely warm, just enough to keep the water fount from freezing. The cord is a little short, but I use a strong extension cord. Otherwise, worked great.

This will be our fourth winter for using this heater in our chicken coop. It does a great job keeping the water thawed, even during the coldest months.
Although the unit does not get hot, for peace of mind I set mine up on a few concrete patio pavers. It helps in preventing too much dirt and straw from getting under the unit itself.

Does what it's supposed too. Sturdy enough and you'd be hard pressed to make your own for a lot less money.

Even though there's a warning about "hot surface", I never felt it that hot to touch, but it did the job with my 5-gallon fount. Never any ice & hens had plenty of non-frozen water during the last 3 winters. Nothing like rating something years after you purchase it! Still works like a charm. Excellent investment.

Water freezing in the chicken house was a big problem for us; this being our first winter with chickens. This heated base solved the problem and also raised the water dish so they don't kick stuff into the water nearly as often. Seemed pricey, but has been worth it.

I have a metal double-walled metal waterer for my chickens, and paired with this water heater it keeps my chickens' water thawed even with the below 20F degree temps we've had in NC these past few days. This morning my pond was frozen over, water bowl in the coop was frozen solid, 55-gal rain barrel frozen over, but the waterer in the run on the heated base stayed thawed all night.

I also have it plugged in through my P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor to make sure it does not draw too much power, and it is barely noticeable. I haven't actually been able to catch it in its "On" mode since the unit is thermostatically controlled, but the proof is in the thawed water.

Tonight's temps should dip down to about 13F, but at least my chickens will have water to drink.

I'm sure this product is great but I needed a heater for outdoor use. The first thing you see when you open the box is For Indoor Use only.

Perhaps I didn't read the product information carefully, but the box doesn't say it either. The product review does say for outdoor, covered use so it unclear to me which information is correct.

So far this product has held up wonderfully. I have a 20gal galvanized waterer sitting on top of it and the base is about an inch wider in diameter. The thermastat is accurate - it is off when the temperature is above freezing and immediately cuts on when it hits 25*F. Easy to clean and to maintain.
