PreSchool-Grade 2 A little girl and her father perform early morning chores on a small, old-fashioned farm, where the one cow is milked by hand and the hens roost in a traditional coop. The muted watercolors suggest a world seen through bleary eyes. The father looks positively cadaverous in the first two illustrations. But a more serious flaw in the book is the ambiguity of its viewpoint. The events are narrated by the father, who understandably provides an adult view of the morning's activities. Unfortunately, the daughter's attempts to help are portrayed as inept bungling. She drops an egg, misses the bucket when she milks the cow, yells louder than the geese honk. McPhail seems to be trying to reach adult readers rather than children. As a result, the father's final question, "What would I do without you?" seems somewhat sarcastic instead of affectionate.
