It also recommends the use of cayenne pepper for decreasing blood clots, reducing cholesterol levels, and preventing heart attacks. There are also recipes appropriate to the dates during which they appear, such as an August recipe for "switchel," a concoction of sugar, ginger, vinegar, and water to be served "at haying time or during any hot work under the sun."
In addition to its healthful tips from old-timers, the calendar includes the moon quarters and Yankee holidays, including Patriot's Day and Bunker Hill Day.
