Today, fruit is available in abundance, nearly year-round, from the supermarket. But theres something wonderful about stepping out your back door to pick crisp, juicy apples from your tree, or tangy-sweet raspberries from bushes planted with your own hands. For one thing, growing your own means harvesting your fruits and berries at just the right time, at the peak of flavor. It also means controlling exactly what kinds of pesticides or other additives go into your produce. Besides, growing your own fruits and berries is easy and very enjoyable!
Within The Farmers Wifes Guide to Fabulous Fruits and Berries, Barbara Doyen, a real farmers wife, gives detailed instruction for growing the many beautiful plants and trees that produce fruit and berries, along with terrific recipes. From the domestic to the exotic, the Farmers Wifes expertise is always thoroughly explained and calculated to bring out the best in whatever plant she is working with.
Growing, Storing, Freezing and Cooking Instructions, with 200+ Recipes and Serving Ideas for:

This book has an answer to every question! Please be aware that even though tomatoes are fruits, they are not covered in this book but she does cover them in her veggie book. I have both and would highly recommend them to any gardener of all levels. I am probably somewhere in the middle and I love her writing style...so easy to understand and doesn't make you feel stupid. Easy categories and clear index make it easy to refer back and forth.

This is a great investment for how to harvest, freeze and create recipes for any particular fruit or berry. No pictures, but no pictures are needed. I enjoyed it.

BEST. BOOK. EVER.,
This review is from: The Farmer's Wife Guide To Fabulous Fruits And Berries: Growing, Storing, Freezing, and Cooking Your Own Fruits and Berries (Hardcover)
I found this book at the library and read it cover-to-cover in two days (which is very rare for me, especially with non-fiction) then went out and bought my own copy. Barb Doyen is my HERO! She takes you ALL the way from selecting a spot on your property to plant in, through choosing the best variety of fruit tree or plant for your environment and tastes, through composting, organically getting rid of pests, using household items to aid you in growing, pruning, thinning, harvesting, putting up and cooking your fruit. This book simply has it ALL, EVERYTHING you need to know to get started as a fruit farmer, or you could use it just as a cookbook! Her recipes are fantastic and imaginative, and her writing is interesting and funny.
This book is by FAR the most frequently sought-out book in my house, it's an irreplaceable reference.
