Book Description

April 30, 2012 Heartland Foodways

In this splendidly illustrated book, food writer and self-described farm groupie Janine MacLachlan embarks on a tour of seasonal markets and farmstands throughout the Midwest, sampling local flavors from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. She conducts delicious research as she meets farmers, tastes their food, and explores how their businesses thrive in the face of an industrial food supply. She tells the stories of a pair of farmers growing specialty crops on a few acres of northern Michigan for just a few months out of the year, an Ohio cattle farm that has raised heritage beef since 1820, and a Minnesota farmer who tirelessly champions the Jimmy Nardello sweet Italian frying pepper. Along the way, she savors vibrant red carrots, slurpy peaches, vast quantities of specialty cheeses, and some of the tastiest pie to cross anyone's lips.

Informed by debates about eating local, seasonal crops, organic farming, sanitation, and biodiversity, Farmers' Markets of the Heartland tantalizes with special recipes from farm-friendly chefs and dozens of luscious color photographs that will inspire you to harvest the homegrown flavors in your own neighborhood.

Review

"[MacLachlan's] enthusiastic tone begs us to take a road trip, and discover the rural, simple beauty and culinary treasures of the areas about which she writes. . . . [An] honorable, just, and heartfelt homage to the hard work and determination of people who continue (or are new to) the Heartland's centuries-old farming traditions."--The Local Beet: Chicago

"Janine MacLachlan provides vivid portraits of the farmers and producers who make each market unique and representative of local foods. This book will be much enjoyed by farmers' markets regulars, foodies who love to read about good locally produced food (it is a heroic tale), cookery book lovers, and a wide audience interested in midwestern culture."--Bruce Kraig, president, Culinary Historians of Chicago, and Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance

"What an inspiring read! Illustrating the creativity, diversity, and conscientiousness of Midwestern market farming and food culture, Farmers' Markets of the Heartland provides a fresh take on a vital piece of American identity."--David Rand, Board of Directors, National Farmers Market Coalition, and Partner at Quarter Circle Seven Ranch in Marengo, Illinois

"Fans of Midwestern farms and farmers markets are in for a literary treat. . . . Filled with tempting photographs and select recipes, the book focuses on folks as much as food."--Chicago Tribune

Love this book!!! I have shopped at farmers markets and currently work at one in Chicago. For anyone who is curious what farmers markets are about and not just in the midwest but in general, this book is for you!!! For anyone wanting a great idea for a summer road trip through the midwest this book is for you!!! For anyone interested in learning more about sustainable food this book is for you!!!

This book is an ode to the farmers markets of the midwest, it includes some great simple recipes from some of the top chefs driving sustainable food and tasty food in the midwest. The pictures are beautiful and she is incredibly comprehensive in a very easy to read way covering everything from what exactly is for sale, who are the farmers, what are their farms about, how do you shop a market and just plain providing tons of accurate information about the different farmers, market managers and she is able to describe the personality of all these markets.

So for anyone needing a farmers markets 101, or who is curious about one in their area this book is very approachable, easy to flip through because of all the beautiful photography, some great recipes and it shows how much in love she is with the farmers markets, you will be too when you read this book!

This is book is going to become one of my "go to" books when it comes to the markets. I think it would be a great holiday present because it is visually stunning, and has a lot of terrific ideas! Love it!

Besides being absolutely gorgeous to look at, this book is brimming with superb information. It's part travelogue, part cookbook, part historical guide to midwest farm country, and part biographical treatment of the farmers who live and love the land and are quietly supplying healthy options to city folks like me. Our author is the perfect pilot. She documents it all with a lot of heart. We can see how much she cares, and her enthusiasm is contagious. The book is a treasure. Now she's just got to promise she'll keep revising it in years to come so we can keep up with new farmer's markets as they crop up. (Pun!)
