Book Description

Culled from the pages of The Farmer’s Wife and adapted for today’s lifestyles and kitchenware, these recipes help today’s cook recapture the full rich flavor of slow-cooked food steeped in the traditions of America’s heartland.  With a modicum of preparation in the morning or even the night before, this charming cookbook shows anyone how to dish up the kind of meals that yesterday’s farmer’s wife prepared, the slow-cooked beans and barbeque, casseroles, and hot dishes, soups and stews, pot roasts and puddings for a few friends, a big family, or a whole community.

From the Back Cover

Long before the Internet and high-speed travel connected us all, The Farmer’s Wife magazine gave hard-working rural women a place to find and share advice about everything from raising chickens to running a farm kitchen. Work on the farm was never-ending, so any recipes or advice that allowed women to spend less time in the kitchen was very welcome.

Slow cookers were the answer to many prayers. Women no longer had to slave over a hot stove for hours to prepare a meal. You could throw a few ingredients in the pot early in the morning, plug it in, turn it on, and there was a scrumptious meal ready when the dinner hour rolled around. These classic recipes from The Farmer’s Wife have been updated to be used in today’s modern kitchen with an electric slow cooker. Everything from soups and main dishes to desserts can be created in your slow cooker. These classic recipes offer the readers nostalgia with little time in the kitchen thanks to today’s technology.

Here’s a sampling of recipes you’ll find inside:

Black Bean Soup

I love the trivia and old ads in the book. But the best part is the recipes. They use good, wholesome ingredients. It's very hard to find a slow cooker cookbook that doesn't rely on stuff like cream of something or other soup in it. We have food allergies so stuff like that won't work for us.

This book has some interesting receipes and many cool old advertisements. Nowhere is it concerned with making its recipes more health conscious than those oldie-time one from which they are derived, however!

I bought this for my daughter but ended up keeping the book for myself. I loved the recipes, but I did not think my daughter would appreciate them like I did. Still the book is excellent. Its one of the downfalls of buying a book on-line. You really don't always know what you are getting. Still I do enjoy the book

I didn't like this cookbook. Have given it to Goodwill and hoping someone there will want it.
