This is my FAVORITE cookbook ever! I am a self-proclaimed cookbook junkie who lost all my collection in hurricane Katrina. I purchased this cookbook ten years ago in my college bookstore and have made so many memorable dishes from it. Aside from the great food it is a pleasurable read. I am so happy it is still in print and can't wait to get it back!

My Favorite Cookbook!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Farmhouse Cookbook (Hardcover)
The author traveled the country visiting farms and collecting recipes, many of which are family recipes made for generations. Each is introduced with a section of text explaining it's origin, how to select and use ingredients, hints on cooking, variations, and stories of the people she met while compiling this book. If you want good home cooking made simple but VERY tasty, this is the book for you.

I have a extensive cookbook collection and this is my favorite book hands down. Everything I've made from it has been very good. Some of the recipes are a bit labor intensive but I've found that the end result is worth the effort. The whoopie pies are a bit of heaven on earth!

The loin of pork with the coriander crust is out of this world, and a regular at my house. Also, try the mashed yams and apples, which pairs nicely with the pork recipe.

I was so pleased to receive this book through Pamela Ball. She shipped it so quickly and in fabulous condition. The whole book is worth every penny. So sad that it's out of print at the moment. They should consider putting this book into circulation again soon. The recipes are wonderful. A crucial part of a cookbook collection.

MORE THAN JUST A COOKBOOK...AN EXTELLENT INFORMATIVE AND FUN READ.,
This review is from: Farmhouse Cookbook (Hardcover)
What an absolute delightful read this work is. Note I said "read" because this is so very much more that just an ordinary cookbook; although an excellent book of cooking it is!
The author, Susan Herrmann Loomis whose previous work The Great American Seafood Cookbook is one of the best seafood cookbooks I have ever used, spent two years traveling around the country, visiting small towns, farms, ranches, vineyards, orchards and the many private homes found on these places, talking with the people who live there and sharing their food. This book offers over 300 recipes directly from the kitchens from ordinary Americans; ordinary Americans who can all happen to cook and cook well. There is a representation from many states, from the East Coast to the West Coast. Fowl, fish, beef, port, vegetables, beans, grains, fruit, soups, baked goods, breads and so much more. We have personally tried and tested around 15 recipes from this work and I must say, each was an absolute delight. The author has liberally sprinkled very interesting stories about the people who fed her along with historical facts, origins of dishes and heaps of trivia; food trivia. Do you know what a Cornish Game Hen is? Want to try something new and a bit different? Try dilled beets and potatoes or a blue cheese and onion tart. I found the stories of the people interviewed (while the author was eating their food) to be fascinating and just proves what I have always said in that no matter where you travel, if you make just a bit of an effort, you will always find interesting and nice people. Please take note: Many of the recipes in this work are quite labor intensive. Most of the dishes here are far more than "chop, chop and stick it in the microwave" type stuff. All are prepared by what we refer to as "scratch." That being said, most of the offerings here can be made by the relatively inexperienced cook. If you do not already have this book, then you need to get a copy on your shelf. Even if you don't cook, this is one interesting read. Don Blankenship The Ozarks

I've had this cookbook for many years and it's one of the few cookbooks that has lots of recipes that I always go back to. Most of my pie recipes have come out of this book over the years. Along with the great, homey recipes are lots of stories about the farm families that these recipes came from. It is as relevant today to those interested in eating local foods as it was when it was published. I purchased another copy of this book for my sister because I like it so much!
