I live in an area that is hospitable to rats due to massive vegetation and water. I also happen to have chickens. Have extensive experience over the years dealing with periodic rats.

This poison is the best you can get - the poison ingredient is the same as some grocery store available poisons, but the "99% other ingredients" are actually made of stuff rats want to eat. Up close the bars look like yellow bird suet cakes with seeds etc in them. Far, far more effective than the compressed green poison baits you find at local chain stores. (My feed store is the only local carrier for Just One Bite II Bars) If you have kids/pets, put the bait in locking bait box stations. If that's not a concern, run a bit of wire through the center hole of each bar and tie wire in a loop to something so the rats can't pack off the whole bar at once. This way you know if they've been eating it and when to replenish the bait. The package says to put bars on a length of coat hanger - but unless the coat hanger is impaled in the ground the rats will make off with the wire...

I've tried other similar baits, and have made up my mind that this one is my choice from now on.

The rats in the desert West are about the cutest I've ever seen in the wild, their common name is wood rat, but they are the pack rat of Western lore. Cute they may be, but they can be as big a problem as their less attractive Eastern kin (I've used this product on both, over the years). They have the whole desert to cavort in, with no objection from me, but when they start spreading their droppings around my patio, or chewing on my vehicle wiring, as they are wont to do, the truce is over.

I've used several brands of similar bait, waxy blocks filled with grains and other attractive rodent foods, and laced with similar poisons. I use that type, with a hole in the middle, to place on the wire stakes inside bait stations. They all seem to be effective, IF THE RATS WILL FEED ON THEM.

Using a bait station is important to lessen the likelihood that other wildlife, pets, etc., will encounter the poison, but it is particularly important for the pack rats of the desert West. They'll carry away an incredible amount of pellets or other loose or untethered bait, and store it away in their nests (middens as they are called). They don't call them pack rats for nothing. This is a huge waste of bait, and adds to the danger of unintended poisonings. The most common rat-style bait stations require a "key" to open, and most importantly, have 4 wire stakes to slip the bait chunks over, requiring the rats to eat them on the spot, and not just carry them away, often never to be consumed (the chunks have holes to make this easy).

The reason I've chosen the Farnam "Just One Bite" yellow bars over several similar brands of green bars is that THE RATS LIKE THEM.

To our surprise and dismay, we began hearing chewing and rustling within different walls of our home. After a couple of different days of this, we became positively convinced that a rat had managed to enter the wall system of our home.

Being a long avid buyer and researcher upon Amazon, I began researching rat poison. Due to the ratings of this particular product, I purchased some. We were pretty convinced that we only had one rat in our house, but after a couple of weeks of hearing that rat in different rooms, we made the plunge and purchased this poison.

To the best of our knowledge, the rat could not actually enter the interior of our home, as the rat seemed to be confined and stuck within the walls, but that also gave the rat passage to any walls of our home. So I did not believe putting poison or traps within the interior of our home, would be able to have an effect upon the rat that was permanently stuck within the walls, at least up to this point. But since we own a huge double wide mobile home, it seemed logical to me, that the rat entered the home from beneath. So my hope was, that if I could place some rat poison beneath our double wide, within the confines of our skirting, that the rat would eventually find it, and eat it, and die.

The rat poison arrived and it was now time to put our plan into action. Although other reviewers talked about placing whole bars in several different locations, that seemed like overkill to me, since I believed we only had one rat. So I took just one bar of the rat poison, and I cut it in half. Now out of half a bar, I further cut it into three pieces. I took those three small pieces, and placed them just inside the skirting, at three different corners of our home.

Used this product to get rid of a few house mice that entered my home. I must say it worked well and I haven't had any issues since. Also, I use this product in some of my shrubbery where I've seen mice running along the fenceline. Haven't seen them since! By far the only product I'll use for these pesty pests. My local Wal-Mart stop carrying this product, so now I purchase it from a local feed store. The Feed Store advised that the EPA is threatening to remove this product from the market. I'm not sure if it's just the bars are all the Just One Bite II products.
