4.0 out of 5 stars basic primer for Farscape, March 10, 2001
This review is from: Farscape - Collection 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This collection includes the first 6 episodes of Farscape: "Premiere" and "I,E.T." are on the first tape; "Back and Back and Back to the Future" and "Thank God It's Friday,Again" are on the second; "Exodus from Genesis" and "Throne for a Loss" are on the third. This means that if one buys this collection, there is no need to buy the separate tape with Premiere/I,E.T. on it.

Farscape is one of the best science fiction shows to come on in many years. While the first year of episodes aren't the best of Farscape, these are the ones that establish the characters and the basic plotlines. The first year seems to be more a series of stand-alones, but as the series builds it seems to be establishing a story arc----if it can be anywhere as good as Babylon 5 (which sets the mark for high quality extended story arcs), which this past season suggests may be so, it will be first-rate. Knowing the background provided in these 6 episodes will allow a viewer to understand and enjoy the ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Ahead and Take the Risk, July 15, 2001

This review is from: Farscape - Collection 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As I write this, Farscape is well into its 3rd season. I have known about the existance of Farscape from its beginnings. However I never bothered to watch the show because it looked so weird. Knowing that "muppets" (I tease as the show is produced by Jim Henson Entertainment) played two of the characters didn't help. But with everything else in reruns and SciFi showing new episodes, I thought, "What the heck." So I watched an episode and was surprised at how quickly I was absorbed into the show despite knowing almost nothing about it. Five episodes later I can say I am hooked and have purchased "Farscape - Collection 1".

Three tapes come in this box-set and each tape contains 2 epidsodes. These are shown in order.

Tape 1: "Premiere" & "I, E.T." Tape 2: "Exodus From Genesis" & "Throne For A Loss" Tape 3: "Back and Back and Back to the Future" & "Thank God It's Friday, Again"

Overall, not to shabby for the first-six episodes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Farscape Season 1, November 20, 2000

I have been following the Farscape series since its debut on the Sci Fi channel last spring. Being a bit of a science fiction buff, I was very pleased with Farscape.

In short, a human astronaut has inadvertantly slipped into a wormhole, and was propelled to some distant corner of the universe. There, he is taken aboard a ship (a living ship) along with a band of escaped prisoners fleeing the Peacekeepers (also known as Sebations), who are very much like humans.

In many Science fiction fantasies, the plot line is weakened to make way for the viewer/reader to marvel at the wonders of science and technology. This is NOT the case in Farscape at all. By all means, the alien costumes are the best I've ever seen on any TV series of this genre (sorry Star Trek, you've been totally outdone). Further, the show acknowledges recent trends which point to advancement of biological technologies (the ships are alive for starters).

But the true gem of this series lies in its intense story plots. Many times, I've found myself transfixed in the story (yes...the story, and not the big made up "tech" terms like in other shows of this type). This strength has the potential to bring viewing audiences other than sci-fi lovers, as there is substantial substance to each episode.

If you're a sci-fi guru, I'd highly reccomend this series because along with the stunning effects and costume, there's an actual story line and not just a bunch of made up tech terms which sound good.

If you've always hated science fiction, I'd still reccomend this series because while it has it all (romance, action, drama, and some horror), it still opens up your mind enough to wonder about "the great beyond".

Overall, excellent series, you'll enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly original SF series, October 23, 2001

I'm real picky about my SF. Most TV SF is poor to horrible, with little character development and derivative plotting.

Farscape is that rare exception, like Babylon 5 or the better moments of ST:TNG. The characters we meet in these first episodes continue to grow and change as the series progresses, often in surprising ways. The stories themselves are wonderfully different -- you never quite know what to expect, and from whom.

My only complaint: The publisher needs to put these out much faster. A Season 1 & Season 2 DVD set would be greatly appreciated under the tree this Xmas.

Whether you're a Farscape-virgin or a long-time-fan, you've got to get this set. It has the very first episode, which sets everything up, and the next five episodes after that, which flesh out the people and their world. Trust me: If you aren't hooked after watching this show, you aren't paying enough attention!

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you a Sci-fi fan?, February 28, 2001

This has become my favorite series and I couldn't wait for it to come out on VHS. The show is the perfect combination of just about everything, it has a little comedy, a little drama, some serious moments, and science fiction that you want to believe in. You will find yourself rooting for these unlikely heroes and you wont be able to wait until the next episode. The story lines are unpredictable and only get better as the show goes on. The series is now going to go into it's third season and I can't wait. This set of tapes is the series premiere(and the 5 episodes that follow) and should not be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just one of the best SF shows on TV..., May 6, 2001

...one of the best shows on TV, period. Witty, intelligent and daring, Farscape regularly breaks the rules of storytelling and gets away with it. This collection contains the first few episodes, in which the basic premise of the show (contemporary astronaut gets shot through a wormhole, winds up in parts unknown on board a living ship inhabited by escaped prisoners) is established and the characters are introduced. The most amazing thing about it, is that Farscape's universe starts off rich, well defined, and very real, and it just keeps getting better. People who sit down to watch these tapes will find themselves in a story where conflict is already manifest, not something that builds over several shows. Farscape hits the ground running. As of this writing, Farscape is in its third season, and continuing to surprise its loyal viewers with risk-taking writing and shocking character developments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anybody even remotely interested in sf, April 8, 2001
This review is from: Farscape - Collection 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If, for some strange reason, you haven't seen Farscape yet then this is your ticket to a few hours of GREAT entertainment.

In a nutshell, Farscape has believable characters, amazing plot twists, a lot of humour (but not the cheap LEXX style), brilliant sfx and a great cast (gotta love Claudia Black).

Believe me, I'm trying hard to find something to criticise in this series but the best I can come up with is that the basic premise isn't all that original. Other than that, Farscape takes the best of Star Trek and Babylon 5, adds a few nice twists and voilà, you have the sf show of the decade.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Sci Fi EVER on TV, August 27, 2002

With its unexpected plot twists, fresh and witty scripts, and some of the best special effects you can find, Farscape is easily the best SF to ever be aired on television. It constanly throws everything traditional about SF out the window and gets away with it because its so damn weird. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific sci-fi show, August 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Farscape - Collection 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
What can I say about "Farscape"? In my opinion, one of the BEST sci-fi shows of the year. Farscape breaks the ordinary mold, but with an ordinary beginning: A U. S. astronaut (Ben Browder) gets sucked through an wormhole and is "spit" out into another realm, whereupon discovered by an sentient ship: "Moya." He goes into the ship and meets five aliens, and a sixth, but is only a elite, shapely Australian (Claudia Black). They go on many adventures.

"Farscape" is lavishly built and filmed, excellently portrayed by all the cast, and the script is filled with wit and style. The two leading roles, Claudia Black and Ben Browder, are the most engaging and eccentric characters in the series.

Frankly, I'm surprised that this show was nominated for many Saturn awards and Australian awards, but NEVER an Emmy nomination for the actors, set design or even the creator. As far as I know, "Farscape" is highly appraised by the sci-fi and the Australian film academies, but not appraised by the U.S. Film and Art Academy.

To me, it seems just plain stupid that a superb cable/satellite show like this is overlooked by the Emmy Awards, when they put up "Sex and the City," "The Sopranos," and "Resurrection Blvd." for many Emmy nominations, but never for the sci-fi circuits.

This show is for all ages, but little ones should stay away, due to profanity, sexual content, and some violence. Otherwise, it's fine for all ages to watch and enjoy.
