Maybe it's wrong to call Thyrfing a unique band, but their musical evolution and progression, still with their roots in mind, has given the band a wide amount of fans all over the world. Thyrfing plays their Metal with a northern touch alongside their folk- and symphonic influences, and they are counted among the finest of their genre. The band was formed in the beginning of 1995, and after two demo-tapes Hammerheart Records picked them up in 1997. Their first self-titled album, produced by Tomas Skogsberg at well-known Sunlight Studio, saw the light of day in March 1998. The press agreed upon that the album was maybe not a masterpiece, but a warning for what to come. Thyrfing was a band with potential. Exactly one year after the debut, "Valdr Galga" was released. This time recorded at Abyss Studio and produced by Tommy Tagtgren. The album received amazing reviews everywhere and 1999 turned out to be one of the most successful periods of the band. Thyrfing played at Dynamo Open Air, followed by a three-week tour with Six Feet Under, Vader, Enslaved, Cryptopsy and Nile. For this tour Hammerheart released Thyrfing's two demos on a limited CD called "Hednaland". In the beginning of 2005 the band decided to sign a deal with a new label, namely Regain Records from Sweden, and during the summer the fifth album "Farsotstider" ("Times of Plague") was recorded (as well as a successful appearance at Sweden Rock Festival). "Farsotstider" was mainly recorded at Cosmos Studio in Stockholm with producer Henrik Edenhed (Lambretta, Kent) and is another impressive chapter in the Thyrfing saga. For the first time the lyrics are entirely in Swedish and the album truly shows the band as it's best. So lean back, and enjoy another strong release from Thyrfing! Sweden's kings of viking metal have returned to the battle-worm throne with Farsotstider, proudly and boldly, to storm the masses with ancient fury and might. Absent are anthems gloating mead and women amidst golden halls; present are hymns of darkness and death. It seems the Thyrfing guys have listened to a bit of recent Primordial and Moonsorrow, and thankfully so! ... as it's now justified to include their name amongst such valorous ranks, rather than thrown in the endless pit of passionless bands running about playing folkish metal music about Odin and his friends.

Beginning with Far At Helvete, the listener is immediately bound to darkness. Bleak and desolate, angry and visceral; this is new territory for the band, and its execution is far better than I could ever have imagined. A few numbers, namely Elddagjamning and Tiden Laker Intet, have a beautiful climatic quality, rarely present in metal music, that is a sheer delight to hear - think of The Gathering Wilderness done by Swedes. Although a few numbers such as Jag Spar Fordarv and Baldersbalet serve as somewhat lighter songs, as if the sky broods gray instead of black, I hesitate to call any songs even remotely comparable to anything from their first three albums. As if Urkraft was the construction and Vansinnesvisor the voyage, certainly the destination stands bold with Farsotstider.

If you're familiar with Thyrfing's history, and feel their later efforts surpass the quality of their early releases, you are in desperate need to hear this milestone within the band's career. If you're unfamiliar, and enjoy the beauty of raw and organic metal music, I suggest starting here, as regret is certainly unfathomable. Farsotstider shall plague your heart and bleed it black.

Great dynamic's and much darker then before ala first 2 albums but more obscure
