Robin Trower's career has spanned more than four decades. He is one of the finest guitarists in Rock n' Roll history.

Robin Trower spent the early 60's playing guitar in various London based outfits, the most successful one being The Paramount's. What an impressive list of songs!
Mike Fargol
This is an extremely nice set and the mastering is really good (as long as you don't might that Mew's masterings tend to be a bit brighter than some other engineers).
Wayne Klein
It must be the only rock record extant which features lyrical contributions from both Keith Reid and the great Peter Brown.

This second boxed set follows A Tale Untold: The Chrysalis Years (1973-1976)a highly successful boxed set that took Trower's first five albums, b-sides, single edits/mixes and put them on three CDs.

As with the previous set, "Farther on Up The Road" was remastered by Peter Mew. As many are aware Mew's masterings tend to be a bit on the bright side so if you don't like his previous masterings you might not like this. I personally think he did a fine job on this set.

While this set has less in the way of extra tracks, we do get a b-side and a single edit of "One in A Million" and "Bluebird" the former from the sessions for "Victims of Fury" the latter prepared from the album version on "In City Dreams". "Victims of Fury" also appears with the correct track listing (the BGO release had an incorrect track listing with some songs eliminated that were on the original release).

The set does come with an 8 page booklet that includes a brief essay (and comments from Trower and others)as well as the full track listing and credits for each album. This is an extremely nice set and the mastering is really good (as long as you don't might that Mew's masterings tend to be a bit brighter than some other engineers).

Some albums are better than others in this set and I'm sure you have your own favorites. We get both of Trower's earlier collaborations with Jack Bruce ("B.L.T." and "Truce")both of which are pretty good albums. Interestingly, Trower comments in the booklet that the latter album "Truce" is his favorite of the two. It's unfortunate that we don't get any comments from Bruce though.

Robin Trower is one of Rock Music's great survivors, as attested by the now 50 year length of his professional career. "A Tale Untold" documented the foundation of Trower's solo career, the first five albums in which the guitarist established his brand of spacey psychedelic blues-rock. With several top-fifty lps under his belt, Trower sensed the sands of pop music were beginning to shift. "Farther On Up the Road" reveals the strategy of his second incarnation.

With "In City Dreams" (1977), Trower began by enlisting producer Don Davis (famous for Johnny Taylor's "Eargasm" lp) and also brought a new bass player, Rustee Allen, into the fold. The resulting record was probably the most personal and gentle of all Trower's works. James Dewar was in top form as a vocalist, and Rustee Allen's inventive bass lines were a plus. Trower's guitar sound was still huge, but it was honed even further to suit the purposes of the music. My favorite track is still "Little Girl", which shows how brilliantly Trower could create a trance-like feel with his accompaniments, with a command equal to Jimi Hendrix's masterpiece "Little Wing".

"Caravan to Midnight" (1978) carried on where "City Dreams" left off, with breezy and funky song offerings. The title track is an instrumental with Trower at his most "Arabian Nights" exotic. But then, Trower had embraced exoticism as early as 74's "Bridge of Sighs", decorated as it was with Persian style lettering on the cover art.

"Victims of the Fury" (1980) was interpreted as Trower's reaction to Punk. It's more of a hard rock record, with an angry edge to the playing and the lyrics, some of which were supplied by Trower's old mate from Procol Harum, Keith Reid.

Released 27 Feb 2012 - "Father On Up The Road: The Chrysalis Years 1977-1983" on EMI/Chrysalis 5099930138629 is the mega label's second anthology for guitar virtuoso Robin Trower and breaks down as follows:

Disc 1 (79:30 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 9 are the album "In City Dreams" released September 1977 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1148. Track 10 is "Bluebird (7" Edit) - a non-album version. Tracks 11 to 19 are the album "Caravan To Midnight" released August 1978 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1189.

Disc 2 (73:07 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 10 are the album "Victims Of The Fury" released January 1980 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1215. Track 11 is "One In A Million" - the non-album B-side to the 7" single "Victims Of The Fury" released January 1980 on Chrysalis CHS 2402. Tracks 12 to 21 are the album "B.L.T." released February 1981 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1324. The B.L.T. refers to the Guitarist, Bass and Drummer - Robin Trower, Bill Lordan and Jack Bruce.

Disc 3 (71:26 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 9 are the album "Truce" released January 1982 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1352 (credited to Robin Trower and Jack Bruce). Tracks 10 to 18 are the album "Back It Up" released September 1983 in the UK and USA on Chrysalis CHR 1420 and FV 41420 respectively.

To get 6 albums and two 7" single sides thrown in for just over twelve quid is pretty amazing value for money (including a free rip to your PC or Mac). But the big deal here is the 2012 PETER MEW REMASTER. I've raved about this guy's touch at the tape before - even set a tag of his remastered issues for those interested in quality sound (there's hundreds) - and this double jewel-case set is no different.
