Book Description

June 1, 2008
"If Outside magazine had been around during the first turn of the century, Fridtjof Nansen would have been its No. 1 cover boy."—The Chicago Sun-Times

In September of 1893, Norwegian zoologist Fridtjof Nansen and crew manned the schooner Fram, intending to drift, frozen in the Arctic pack-ice, to the North Pole. When it became clear that they would miss the pole, Nansen and companion Hjalmar Johansen struck off by themselves. Racing the shrinking pack-ice, they attempted, by dog-sled, to go "farthest north." They survived a winter in a moss hut eating walruses and polar bears, and the public assumed they were dead. In the spring of 1896, after three years of trekking, and having made it to within four degrees of the pole, they returned to safety. Nansen's narrative stands with the best writing on polar exploration. 20 b/w photographs.

For someone like me who loves tales of early polar exploration and adventure, it's a 'must read.' It's about 700 pages of Nansen's day-by-day diary of three years drifing near the North Pole. Many probably would find it incredibly boring. If survival among the polar bears, walrus' and -40F ice turn you on. . .it's a wonderful fireside read for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars nice, but long read, August 22, 2009

This review is from: Farthest North: The Epic Adventure of a Visionary Explorer (Paperback)
This epic story about drifting in the ice pack is a good book and well written, but gets a little tedious after hundreds of pages about cold, ice and snow.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd Recommend This Bookseller, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Farthest North: The Epic Adventure of a Visionary Explorer (Paperback)
The book was in excellent condition (as reported in the seller's description), and was priced considerably below other copies I found online.
I was also impressed with how quickly the book arrived, which was great since I was on a gift-giving deadline.
One thing I didn't expect: the book is REALLY LONG, like 500 pages, so is a little large to carry around as vacation reading.
