The product works remarkably well for what it is doing and for the low cost of manufacture. It will lift quite a bit of weight. I have levitated an 8 oz orange with it, and it had no difficulty with that.

The patent application for the device is available online. US patent number 2007/0170798A1. It is tough to read though. It reads like it was translated from French and Chinese by someone who didn't understand the invention, which is probably just what happened.

Ernshaw's Theorem states that it is impossible to create a static magnetic field that can levitate an object stably on all axes. The configuration of permanent magnets in the Levitron Revolution holds the levitating magnet stable along the vertical axis and is also stable in tilt. But along the horizontal axes the floating magnet acts like it is balanced on a pin.

The Revolution corrects for this using (apparently) four electromagnets to nudge the floating magnet back into position. Position is sensed by hall effect magnetic sensors in the platform. The four LEDs in the corners indicate which electromagnets are active. When the LEDs are on the electromagnets are off. The idea is that there is no continuous power demanded by the electromagnets, just slight nudges to keep the floating magnet centered on the magnetic field created by the permanent magnets. In normal operation you can sometimes see a slight flicker in the LEDs, but mostly they just appear lit and the electromagnets are off.

The electromagnetic correction system works quite well and will normally keep objects levitating as long as power is applied.

This toy was very fun the first day I got it. Like they say, it's tricky at first, but easy to balance once you get the hang of it.
Unfortunately what they don't mention is the quality of the base seems to degrade incredibly fast to the point that it becomes impossible to keep the thing floating.

I received it a week ago, had about two good days of fun with it, and now it's totally busted. The magnet pulls to the same corner every time you try to balance it, and when you do manage to get it to stay centered, it'll float for 3-5 seconds, just long enough to make sure you know it's mocking you, and it will slam back down to that same damn corner again.

In 5-10 years, when they iron out the many horrendous flaws, these guys are going to have a real sweet product on their hands.
But right now, I spent $100 on an ugly paperweight, and the guarantee I'll lose every argument with my girlfriend over wasting money on dumb crap for at least the next year.

I originally wrote a glowing review of this toy because it really is amazing. I am now editing that review and changing my mind. I've now owned 3 of them. I bought one for work and one for home. The first one died within a few weeks and wouldn't levitate anymore. I sent it back to the company and they sent me a brank new one. The one they replaced it with worked great for about a week and a half and now no longer levitates. The third one sort of works but after 5 to 10 minutes starts wobbling off axis and crashes into the base. I have to leave it off for a while and it works for a little while longer then not. I love this toy so much, but I really can't recommend it based on its reliability/durability.

I got this for Christmas. Worked great at first. It's a bit tricky to get the magnet to float the first few times but if you follow the directions you can get the hang of it in just a few minutes. I could do it and my daughter (9) could do it, no problem. It's pretty remarkable once you have the magnet suspended. We played with it for 15-20 minutes each day and unplugged it when not in use. Today, though, the magnet will not stay suspended. I suspect something went wrong with the electronics in one of the corners used to balance the magnet. Now it is completely useless.

I was excited to receive this product but it broke right away. The LED's used to guide you to the center and now they don't do anything other than stay on. The magnet wont levitate anymore and simply sticks to the base.

The first one worked for a few minutes, then shut off and wouldn't turn on. It was quickly replaced by Amazon. The second one lasted even less time and won't turn on. How disappointing as this was a gift.

I bought a total of 10 pieces to try this product, and out of these, 4 came defective. This is a 40% incredible rate! If you are unlucky, the sensors will not be working properly, and your device will never be in equilibrium. Even when you are lucky and get a functioning device, it will get hot in less than 24 hours of use, so it is not possible to have it at your desk, as a permanent item.
So bottom line is, when it works, it will work only for small amounts of time.
Finishing and overall appearance is better than their competitors, but as a whole this class of devices still lack development to be really a hit.

Have had it for a couple of days now. It doesn't take long for the base to overheat and it to shut itself off. At that point the magnet no longer stays centered and it and whatever else is being levitated will fall to one corner. This product needs some serious rethinking of it's construction.
If you want to buy your kids something that they cannot depend on working correctly and being disappointed in, this would be it.
