5.0 out of 5 stars Endless Fun!
Whenever I get bored and it is dark out I turn this toy on and I love to watch those little red balls go! They keep going back under the volcano and the bubbles push them out through the top. I bought this for my son, a 9 year old who is facinated by natural wonders - tornados, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. He LOVED this! It's about as mezmerizing as those little water bead toys that run like clock work. I was concerned it would be too un-volcano-like for him, but the red glow and the rush of "lava" out of the top was good enough for him. Even the others in the room, children and adults alike, had to say how "cool" it was.

This volcano lamp was just adorable! It was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I can't find any more lamps like this, so if anyone know where any are at then please comment back. Great price, great product and condition, and shipping was great. Will definitely buy from them again!

5.0 out of 5 stars A volcano for all ages; an eruption of fun for everyone, January 7, 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

This volcano sits on my desk and is an endless source of wonder and reward. Like fish in aquarium, it is soothing to simply watch the balls rise and fall like the lava droplets they are meant to represent. The led light casts a volcanic glow around the mouth of the volcano and the shadows of the falling lava chunks create a waves of light and dark cascading down the fiery mountain.

For the reviewers who doubt the educational merit of this desktop marvel I want to make some suggestions. There are so many forces at play in this toy that it could be used as a vehicle for a number of lessons on principles of science. Velocity, buoyancy, friction, suction, currents, and the tectonic movements that cause volcanic eruptions just to name a few. If you're wondering how to use this toy in a lesson try answering any one of these questions:

* What forces the balls to rise? Why don't the balls get stuck on the way up? How do they get pulled back in at the bottom of the volcano?

* Why do they fall so slowly? What is the function of the drops of soap in the volcano? Why not use plain water?

* Why are there red and white balls in the volcano? What is expelled from a real volcano?

* Why do the balls fall the way they do? Why do some get sucked back into the spray of the volcano and other are pushed to the edge of the container and fall far away from the mouth of the exploding mountain?

* How does the energy from the batteries get turned into energy that shoots the balls out of the volcano? How does the energy in the battery get turned into light in the red LED?

This is a model for demonstrating so many physical laws and geological forces that it's hard not to find something to talk about. Just have some fun looking up the answers with your daughter or son on a weekend or ask if they are learning about any of those things in school. It's never too soon to talk about science.

As a recent gift, I personally enjoy my volcano on my desk. It gets my creative juices flowing when I think about all those forces at work and it's calming on hectic days to be mesmerized by the balls silently float down only to be drawn back into the fury of the erupting volcano again.

It is a mini volcano, and in the right hands, a mini wonder of scientific principles. I love it!

I first noticed that the page for this product mentioned multicolored led and comes with an adapter, but after further discovery it was for a higher end model. This unit requires 4 AA batteries and is a single red led. The red on the volcano looks pretty nice but I was kinda of hoping there would have been a light inside the volcano itself. I decided to use an extra 3 Volt output adapter I had and after a long trial and error period I was successful in wiring the adapter to both the led and the motor pump. Its running fine and the quality of the parts seem good. $15 felt like a fairly decent price I just wish more detail was paid to the volcano but overall a decent light and even after hitting it on counters and desk tops, not to mention overpowering the unit with a 9 volt adapter the first time, its going strong.

If you read some of my reviews you will find I have purchased several Volcano items due to my sons fascination with Volcanoes. Some were good, others ok and a few just sub-par. But of all the items I have purchased for him this is his favorite. I know it isn't really a toy but he has too much fun with it and it works well with the educational material I have previously purchased for him. So that being said for a 6 year old boy trying to learn more about Volcanoes, this one interactive tool/toy has been the one that came out on top.

My kids loved this! They received one that lasted a year and they accidentally broke. I bought two to replace them and one leaked from the bottom immediately. The second leaked slowly and a week later we noticed it ruined the dresser. Awful!

Bought this for my 9 year-old son. The micro beads make this soothing sound as they cascade down the sides of the volcano. Mesmerizing...also could be a night light.

I bought this as a gift for a child, and I'm returning it, because I wouldn't give this as a gift to anyone. "Interactive sculpture"? "Kinetic energy"? "Created by physicists"? No. None of the above. Folks, this is a tiny lava lamp with a little red mound in the shape of a volcano inside. It isn't worth seventeen bucks. It isn't worth five bucks. Don't buy it unless you're in the market for an overpriced tiny lava lamp wrapped up in deceptive packaging. What a rip-off.
