From Booklist
Golbin, curator of textiles at the Louvre, gives full rein in her book to the illustrations; each of 35 (mainly French) designers is given approximately one page of biographical and philosophical background. All the usual "suspects" are included, from the elegant Gabrielle Chanel to funk-and-punk Rei Kawakubo and Vivienne Westwood. The introduction paves the way for some thoughtful considerations of trends in fashion, according to era: the golden age of couture (1940-63), the time when youth ruled (1964-79), and fashionable fashion (1979 to the present). An authoritative, sophisticated overview of the rags-to-riches business. Barbara Jacobs
