Book Description

From lavish events attended by high-profile personalities such as Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Jacqueline Onassis, and Yves Saint Laurent to the latest creative ventures of Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Donald Trump, Ira Neimark, the legendary leader of fashion luxury retail, recounts how he and his talented fashion and merchandising team brought Bergdorf Goodman to its leadership position an approach, he shows, that continues to inform the most successful designers and business leaders today. While his personal anecdotes focus on how and why Bergdorf helped build the fashion industry during one of the most exciting periods in its history the late sixties through the early nineties the author also shares his views on how contemporary retailers have increased profits by skimping on service, resulting in the loss of customer loyalty. The Rise of Fashion and Lessons Learned at Bergdorf Goodman is a valuable resource for anyone who aspires to succeed in the business of luxury fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book but BE AWARE... February 16, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was at Bergdorf Goodman with my BFF Maria and when I came home I wanted to see if there were any books about the store and I found this and Crossing The Street To Bergdorf Goodman's by the same author. I wanted to make sure I was not going to fall for same book, BE AWARE... Some books will be the SAME content but with a different cover and different publisher and maybe different page amounts - either leaving pages out - or adding more in newer reprints - SO BE AWARE of this, with this particular title, I couldn't tell because only one of these had a look inside feature and that was this newer book. So, I decided since Amazon has such a great return policy even all vendors I have bought from are very cooperative, I chose to buy both and check for myself. Well GOOD thing I DID. And a lovely surprise happened!!! - they are TWO DIFFERENT BOOKS!!!! YAY! TWO BOOKS on this lovely darling jewel box of a store. This 'Rise of Fashion' Book is a SEPERATE BOOK than the 1st! YAY! It says this in the front of the book. BE AWARE...Always beneficial for us to look at table of contents, copyright and publisher and page count, then I look on the page with the copyright to see if it says anything about being reprinted or what the 'originally printed as...' mentioned. If you do find yourself with a duplicate copy of a book always keep your receipt in your wallet and explain what happened and return for a full refund. Sometimes you just can't know untill you see the book in person. SO, if you love Bergdorf Goodman's and you like to know and are curious of the history from personel account perspective, buy this book and also go buy Crossing The Street to Bergdorf Goodmans. You will have two very lovely, interesting books you can add to your book collection! Take Away from this review: THIS AUTHOR HAS TWO DIFFERENT Books about Bergdorfs. Get them. Totally worth the price to buy them BOTH. I wanted to write this review so everyone can know and buy with confidence. Enjoy!

A terrific read!!! Invaluable lessons learned, should be read by anyone involved in luxury goods in any capacity from manufacturing to retail sales. A great lesson in what's gone terribly wrong with OTHER retailers. Bravo, long live Bergdorf Goodman as they celebrate their 111th anniversary in 2012 !!!

Not the most insightful book on retailing I have ever read but does provide a decent insight into the era post-WWII untol the 80's. So a worthwhile read but I did expect more.
