About the Author

As an educator at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Jennifer Lynne Matthews, saw a need to educate her students on how to start their own businesses. Matthews wrote the first edition of Fashion Unraveled in 2008 and completed the second edition in 2010. Understanding the concerns of her students entering the job market, Matthews developed her book to help create an entrepreneurial alternative. Matthews, also a lingerie designer and entrepreneur, began her path in the fashion industry in 1994. She attended Florida State University then transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City to finish her degree. After graduating in 1999 with a specialization in intimate apparel, Matthews began working in the industry as a stylist and freelance designer. Matthews opened her business, Porcelynne Lingerie in 2002. The book is based on Matthews’ experience from opening to sustaining a successful business. She brings the knowledge of running a small business and her expertise in the industry into her book and her classroom. Matthews has won numerous awards for her designs and has received worldwide accolades for her work. Future plans include authoring a collection of books on lingerie design, draping and clothing construction, as well as opening a showroom and education studio in the garment district.

Format: Paperback
This book takes the reader into the fashion industry through the back door. It offers a step-by-step introduction on how to get started by offering information on case studies, blank forms and detail sheets, practical guides for discussion, questionnaires, cut sheets, defining a market and couture advice. It also goes over customers, production, design philosophy, press releases, look books, websites and more. It tells the budding fashion designer how to use the Internet as a marketing tool, how the new fashion maven should set up a fashion blog, and what it means to use SEO content and the best ways to self promotion to get a foot into the door of the fashion business.

The book covers a laundry list of the basics of financial information, product safety, regulations, protecting your work product, costs, budgeting and goes over general accounting principles. I like this section because people new to the fashion industry may assume that it is all about glamour and looking fabulous at all times. But eh financial projections, break even point and exit strategies are all necessary to understand, implement and develop if a person is truly interested in creating a viable product line. This is a great starter book for anyone serious about fashion.

Took a quick look and looks ok as it seems there is a lot of repetitiveness but useful as I am just getting into the biz. Probably would buy another book to supplement this one that is more about how the biz actually works and what you need to know. As in

1. who to buy from
2. how to buy
3. what to know so you do not get ripped off
4. how to write up an order
5. how to write up a design sheet as to my cost and what it should sell for

has a lot of basic business stuff in there and I have a BS in Business

Even after studying fashion, this was a good read to think through the logistics of doing a fashion start-up. I would pair this with a small business management book to go more in-depth on the finance & accounting side, but it's a great overview with good resources.
