Book Description

January 1, 2001
Sophie Dunbar’s Fashion Victims is a hilarious, nail biting roller-coaster ride through the glitter of Hollywood¾ a Tinsel Town mystery the paparazzi would simply die for!

At a swanky L.A. fashion show, the city’s beautiful people gather to witness the bold new debut from Bonsai¾a trend-setting company combining American and Japanese themes. All is glitz and glamour until one of the models, Miko, is found backstage, stabbed and strangled.

After witnessing the gruesome scene, husband and wife production team, Ava and Frank Bernstein, suddenly find themselves with a new client, Nobou-Wei¾Japanese movie star and father of the late Miko. After being hired to work on the production of his latest television series, Ava and Frank are plunged onto the set with a colorful and eccentric cast of characters, each one a potential suspect for murder.

Motives soon surface as Ava and Frank uncover the truth about million dollar inheritances, jealous socialites, sordid family histories, and more scandalous love affairs then an afternoon soap opera. When more dead bodies begin to turn on up the set, Ava and Frank find themselves under pressure to keep the production on schedule, as well as catch a killer with a seemingly indefinite appetite for murder.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Dunbar's "fashion victims"--mostly well-heeled L.A. suburbanites--dress just fine; their problem is murder, not bad clothes. When Barry Lehr and his Japanese wife, Cherry Rose, invite narrator Ava Bernstein and her husband Frank, a director, to the launch of their hot new Bonsai clothing boutique, the Bernsteins hope it will lead to making a commercial. Instead, it leads to murder, as Japanese model Miko, a cousin of Cherry Rose, is found stabbed. At their next job, filming a TV pilot at the palatial home of actor Nobuo Wei, Frank and Ava are on hand for two more murders--both of Japanese women. With basically the same suspects at both murder scenes, Ava can't resist puzzling our who did it and why. Dunbar's snappy, clever prose manages to keep things light even in the face of all the corpses, and Ava and Frank are chic enough to rival Nick and Nora. An entertaining, high-fashion foray into L.A. life--and death. Jenny McLarin
